Kim,

My 17 year old NT son was put on Abilify last year, because of his severe mood swings. All it did was increase his mood swings, and made him suicidal. I did some research, and Abilify has NOT even really been tested on kids. I know a clinic here where I live, was doing a study on how Abilify helps kids with ASD, but I am not sure what the results were. I am not against meds, but Abilify is not a good drug for a lot of kids.

Hi,

my dd went to her physc appt today and her dr changed her med's she was on risperdol all he did was make her so hungry that if we did not feed her fast enough she got very aggressive and melt downed and also made her pass out so she put her on ablify I am scared I know that is for bi-polar. She has gotten pretty bad and now she says i want to die and how she hates everything she only does this when she is angry and not getting her way plus she is only 6.

Hi y'all,I'm fairly new to the group and mostly just read what y'all write, but this one caught my attention. I have a cousin who is on risperdone. It has made a world of difference as far as her behavior. She used to have horrible rages where she'd attack family and even tore her bedroom door off the hinges. With the risperdone she's a totally different kid...so much calmer, happier, and more loving...and about 30lbs heavier. She eats constantly and doesn't seem able to stop. My 8 yr old son has been diagnosed w/ Asperger's, ADHD, and Bipolar. I recently had to have him hospitalized for 9 days because his rages had gotten so bad he attacked several younger children, including 3 kids on the school bus, and choked them. He had daily meltdowns, would often scream that he hated me, and everyone else, begged us to kill him, and cried about everything. He only ate a few particular foods, was VERY unbending about certain things, and had to wear a hoodie (w/ the hood on) at all times. He started Abilify about 6 weeks ago and is literally a different kid. No more rages, much more flexible, eating more and different foods, and has even started taking his hoodie off and telling jokes that make sense! For us Abilify has been a life saver. Unfortunately every drug is going to affect every person different and it's all going to be trial and error. Abilify is the 6th med we've tried. I really hope y'all are able to find what works for your child...it's a horrible thing to see them so miserable, sad, and angry and be so helpless to stop it! Don't give up though...it just takes time and perseverance!TerriSent from my HTC on the Now Network from Sprint!

Risperdal and Abilify are both atypical antipsychotics, Abilify is just newer (and a *lot* more expensive), and supposedly has fewer side effects. Both are used for Bipolar (they both have a mood stabilizing effect), as well as other mental health problems (schizophrenia, and as an add-on for depression). Both help some people with ASDs, but of course neither works for everyone. Either way, Abilify isn't any more scary than Risperdal - they both have the same risks and benefits. Sometimes one works when the other one doesn't, so it's worth giving it a try.
