You are ahead of us on this, . Josh denies it when I call his

attention to it. . .So I have no idea what motivates it. He kind of

hides it by bringing his hands up to his mouth and doing it behind his

hand.

I'm definitely going to have to bring this up to his therapist to see

what he suggests we do.

I'll really be interested to see what other responses you get too.

That's usually one of the signs I look for in Ben. I will see him lick his

fingers after he touches something, usually the garbage can or something. Drives

me batty. He is not sure why he does it, either to clean them or some reason he

doesn't know. His ocd comes and goes, and is gone right now. But, it is always

just around the corner.

Compulsively licking things after touching them

Hello All...

My daughter will lick her fingers after touching things and she will

ick and kiss her books. Does anyone else see this behavior? I asked

my daughter why pork (her name for OCD) wants her to do this and she

says, she needs to know what things taste like. If anyone else sees

this...what do you do as a parent? I have run the gamet in regards to

responses and am looking for any creative ideas : )

Thanks!!

Tammy,

I had to laugh when I read your post! My son(6) smells everything too. He does

this odd thing where he runs his fingers under his nose and smells over and

over.

Kate only licks her hands when she's really upset and trying not to show

it -- but now everyone knows what it means when she licks her hands.

As for the sniffing and licking of things, though. I've never put this

together with OCD but Kate has always been very touch sensitive. I don't

mean like feeling things with her fingers but more by rubbing against

things with her back, her cheek, or whatever. She loves backrubs and

hates the feel scratchy tags. When she was littler she'd wear the most

bizarre outfits. I figured out that she was choosing her clothes not by

color or how things looked together but by rubbing each item in her closet

against her cheek to decide which " felt " the best today!

As I say, though, I never put that together with OCD but it could well be.

She used to hate anything denim. This week she actually willingly wore

jeans (twice!) for the first time in years! I was shocked -- she says she

likes them now (if they're soft enough).

Beth (who needs to find a source of half-worn-out jeans in size 6x!)

Okay,

after all these licking posts, I'm starting to think

someone secretly cross-bred our eggs with cats' eggs

and that's what is causing our kids' lick-to-clean

behavior.

Anybody's kid obsessed with balls of yarn?
