Guest guest
Thnaks Trace! This story of the mom taking her son fishing reminded me of the day our son (he was about 7) and I trudged down the road and around the corner to The famous Wolf River...to go fishing. We caught 4 fish, (Bass) we "did them up" when we got home and ate them also. It was a real challenge as I had to wear this wig, due to losing my hair from "whatever" (the second time it happened!) and I had to wear a wide brimmed hat over that hot wig, and it was a hot summer day, there was no shade along the shore...where we could get up close to the water. I was hot and miserable, and those slimwy worms! But, we had a blast! is 28 now and not only my (our) son, but my best friend! Love, Tricia p.s. We both noticed the butterflies, the birds, the frogs, and even a deer...but.. I have Stills Disease, and as you all know..when one has that, they do "see" and "hear" a lot of things that escape another's vision & hearing. -- OT- First Day Fishing- Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Email- For the Fishers of our Still's Family Hello All-Thought this might warm the hearts of our fisherman on the Island.Hope it brings a day of smiles..... Guest guest
One thing I have always strived to do is to get my kids hooked on something, mainly fishing. I take them every single chance I get. I usually take them at my parents cottage as the lake is rowboats only, and if they want out early, it is easily done, as I have no boat to load back onto the trailer, no boat to cover when I get home. I have started to take my oldest son on my boat, and although he doesn't fish a lot, he always enjoys it. I put fish in the livewell to play with (he even names them), I teach him what the different species are (Mainly Smallmouth Bass & Walleye on the Susquehanna) and I even let him drive the boat a little bit when I know it is safe and there is no shallow water for him to make a mistake on. I do this for two reasons....(1) to get them hooked on fishing, so that the wife can never say no (although she rarely does anyway) to our going and (2) to give them a hobby that will hopefully keep them interested enough and busy enough to stay the hell away from drugs. I never realized just how prevalent drugs were in my area, and I think one of the main reasons is that I was always too busy fishing or shooting straight pool (tournaments) to even notice. If you don't have free time to get "acquainted" to drugs, you will most likely never try them. It makes me sick to see how many people I hung around with or knew that are addicted to drugs. Well, have a good one, Kirk. P.S. I always make sure I have the "time" to take my kids fishing. It was important to me as a kid, and I think it will to them. Part of my plan is working, as my oldest wants a tackle box and lures for his birthday (8/17). He cracks me up as he rarely catches anything on lures, but won't use bait because I don't. I even picked a few clippers down the river two weeks ago to make sure he hooked into some bass.....he wouldn't use them, and made me "let them go". Adios. Guest guest
You seem like such a good Dad Kirk. I was very fortunate my son was going up was heavily into sports. That kept him in with a good crowd and kept him very busy. Hence, no time for drugs and drinking. He's now 25 and lazy as can be but he still does not do drugs. Drinks a bit as he is of legal age. I trust his judgment in not becoming an alcoholic! Glad to here you take the time to spend with your kids. Alot of Dad's couldn't be bothered. A pat on the back to you!!! Cheers, Kate OT- First Day Fishing- Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Email- For the Fishers of our Still's Family Hello All-Thought this might warm the hearts of our fisherman on the Island.Hope it brings a day of smiles.....
