Guest guest
Hi I also live in Jersey. You need to contact the DDD _ Department of Developmental Disabilities. If you have'nt already registered with them, do it now. They handle placement and also respite and a bunch of other things. There is a waiting list for placement, but they can also rank things by priority or help out another way. They also have a have a program where a behavior analyst will come to your house to help deal with behaviors. I know all this because I just went through it with my 13 year old. All this is at no cost to you. I've included their website so you can see some of what's available. Call them Monday , if you're already registered, just call your case manager. http://www.state.nj.us/humanservices/ddd/dddservices.html This is very difficult to even ask the question. But my son is autistic, 13 yrs old, over six feet and about 260 pounds. I am a single parent and it is becoming overwhelming to deal with his behaviors, although he is not violent towards me or others. He tears up the house and creates hell for his twin sister (not autistic) and I. We have become isolated and depressed. My question is, how do you begin the process of placing your child in a home where he can learn more independence and how to deal with his frustrations and anger? It is not something I could aford, will the school district or state be of any assistance? We live in south Jersey. Thank you for any comments or advice you may have.Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL.com.

Friends of mine have had to face the same issues you are lving thro right now and while it isnt easy it is often the best answer.............for everyone. He needs help and there are programs 'out there" that can address his needs...and yours..It is just a matter of finding out what is available for you. Guest guest
It is our worst nightmare...one we all share and one we are never ready for..Your love for your son is not in question. It is that very love that causes us Mums to make the hard decisions. I don;t mean to make light of it but have known cases where it was the very best thing for all involved and a loving nuturing relationship flourished once the everyday stresses were eliminated. One step at a time.. Missy placing your child in a home This is very difficult to even ask the question. But my son is autistic, 13 yrs old, over six feet and about 260 pounds. Guest guest
Several years ago I was on a FEAT list serve that disbanded. One of the parents put their daughter in a group home and talked about it in the group and wrote an article in the June 2002 issue of Exceptional Parent: and the group home - I am having a hard time now finding the article online as eparent.com does not have it and find articles.com charges for it. I think I have a copy in my yahoo briefcase and will check that out. There is another publication called Autism Spectrum Quarterly. One of the columnists has three sons on the spectrum and two or three issues ago she wrote about putting one of her boys in a group home. Her column is called - Common stories from an Uncommon parent, Alyson Beytien http://www.asquarterly.com I am looking for an email address for her as well. I also recall reading of a new yahoo group for families with a child in a home or those thinking about it. You may want to search yahoo groups home for that one as well. What state are you in? I believe if you are in CA and consumers of the regional center that they would assist you. Does your child get SSI? Good luck Bonnie Sayers http://autismspectrumdisorders.bellaonline.com ============== --- Rosemary Banks wrote: > Thank you so much for your words. Guest guest
I did find that article from exceptional parent magazine in my yahoo briefcase. If you cannot access this I can cut and paste the word doc in an email to you: http://us.f13.yahoofs.com/bc/443ec4ccm7f8636e3/bc/Mail+Attachments/Gin a_and_the_group_home.doc?bfEMSmGBbiL.IC.R Here is the info on AS quarterly: You can get more information by contacting: Autism Spectrum Quarterly Phone (Toll-Free): 1-877-STARFISH (782-7347) Ext. 3 Email: info@... The Spring 1007 issue has the article Alyson wrote about her son Zach, it is called Conflicted. He started becoming violent when he hit puberty. They sent him to a private residential school. If you order the spring 2007 issue you can read her story or try to email her through the magazine. I believe that you can have SSI directed to the place they live and that pays for the care. Not entirely sure how that works, but know when my ex (who is paranoid schizophrenic) went to a group place for a year they used his SSI. A google search might bring you some further articles.
