Guest guest
First I want to say its been 3 days since J has had his last dose of resperdal. I am now trying to get him off of aitiavin (last of the "Drugs") DH didn't give J his morning dose and J was fine until about 3pm. then he started getting anxiety. I gave him his dose and then we ate dinner. J "decided" he didn't want to eat what we were eating and got mad and hit at me. DH took him into the livingroom and J yelled and got himself all upset. he was sweating real bad from it all. he then got calmed down and is now doing "Ok" for the time being. J takes normally 1 and a half mg of it spead thruout the day. He took a half in the morning-ahalf about 4pm then the other half before bed. Does anyone know how to start to lower this down? His dr. wants to try Vallium (sp)? to replace it to get him off of it. Any suggestions? Anyone ever take their child off of this? Thanks for any information. Guest guest
Lois, why does the doctor want to switch JJ from Ativan to Valium? Is he having some side effects? How long was JJ on the Ativan? The only one of the Antianxiety agents that worked for Karac was the Xanax, and I think it made him feel bad; so Karac took himself off of it. However, I had already cut it from .5mg to .25 mg and reduced it from 3x's a day to one at bed time. Karac has been off the meds for a year , but every now and then he will have a brief anxiety attack, but it doesn't make him aggressive any more. I can tell when he is having one because his eyes dialate. He will usually ask for a bath to calm himself down. Also, I have learned that it helps him to get over it more quickly if I talk to him soothingly, rub the back of his neck, and assure him that it will pass. You'll probably think I am weird or ignorant, but I have taught Karac to pray, "God help me feel better", and it always seems to help him. I started this years ago, and in the beginning I was just at my wits end of how to help him when he was so out of control. Gradually I began to see that it made a difference. I don't know that Karac has any concept of God even though I have taken him to church every Sunday for 12 years, but as a psychology instructor, I do believe there is a strong mind, body connection and "what we believe to be true becomes true in its consequences." Karac believes that it helps, and as he says, "it always does." I'm sorry to have rambled on. None of this has probably had any relevance for you, but I am interested in you and JJ. Let me know how things work out. Pat K ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Guest guest
Have you asked your doctor how to decrease it? I just put my son on Ativan and he is very depressed and very quiet. Go figure. How much Ativan is he on? I would definitely ask the doctor. Perhaps the doctor could do a 1-day dose. Robbie takes 1 mg in the afternoon. The amount you are giving does not sound enough to me. Guest guest
takes 2mgs as needed for stressful situations like crowds and long car rides. It doesn't even make her sleep but it does make her happy! It takes 10 minutes for it to kick in and it lasts about two hours for her. She isn't taking it everyday though so it probably doesn't build up as much. Elaine ----- First I want to say its been 3 days since J has had his last dose of resperdal. I think it causes depression too. Look up side effects to it. Lois Re: Aitiavin-Lorazepam-How to take them off of it
Guest guest
Pat, Hi! He says That vialum stays in the system longer and we can "Wein" him off of it easier. It is causeing J to get agressive. He has taken it for about a year and a half. I think it is great that you talk to Karac about God. I don't know how much J understands either BUT he can say his prayers! <smile> Lois Re: Aitiavin-Lorazepam-How to take them off of it
Guest guest
I did look up the side effects. I am not sure if this is related to the medicine at all. We moved into another apt a week ago and I think he is depressed over that. Good luck with the Valium. Did you say that you tried Risperidol? Guest guest
Lois, you are probably going to have to wean him down as much as you can and then go cold turkey. Reguardless what you do, it will be bad for a week or two or three. That is what we have always seen with . It gets much worse before it gets better. You need to wait at least 2-3 wks to see how things settle down to be before trying another med. You end up with so many med changes ..coming off and going on...at one time that you have no idea what is what. You just have to clear your schedule and go with the flow for a bit. We are using Ativan prn right now for riding in a car. She takes a 2mgs pill if needed and in 10 minutes she is just singing away. If she is kicking and screaming..which is when I use the ativan...at five minutes she is just crying and in 10 min. she is singing. I hope that lasts for awhile! I need a break in the car! Elaine Lana, Not much......We are still working on taking him off Aitiavin. That makes him agressive too. Lois
Guest guest
I think each child responds differently. My son gets tired on the Ativan. So what will you try next or will you wait a while? Guest guest
Lana, Drugs cause J to have a "peradoxal" effect on him. I have been reading and I think J has bipolar with his autism. I am going to the libery tonight to get a book On bipolar. ZEESH! Guest guest
Elaine, I know how ativan makes you feel. it worked great when I use to have panic attacks. The trouble was that J was put on it on a dalily basics 2 years ago and now he has a "peradoxel" effect on it. I work at a school and today was the last day so I am home with J for a while now. I think J has some bipoler going on too. Lois Re: Aitiavin-Lorazepam-How to take them off of it
Guest guest
Lois, What else is J on? We almost diagnosed as bipolar and even had her on lithium. She reacted to lithium so we had to take her off. We got a new neuro and found out the bipolarness was coming from her seizure med. I know that it is possible to have both too though. I know your frustration with meds! Guest guest
Lois, Valium had the same effect on Karac. JJ seems to react to meds a lot like Karac does. How much Ativan are you giving JJ now? Guest guest
Elaine, right now J is just on the aitivin, I did a bipolar test that had 60 questions and 40 of them was JJ! The Dr. I have is a nice "Older" man but I swear..........he knows nothing about autism! he will give you any script you want! I just tried valium on J to see if we could switch to that from aitaivn but he was a goofy mess today! I just gave him his aitiavin tonight and he is doing a "hair" better. Guest guest
Right now is on tegretol, zonegran, keppra, klonopin, ritalin and ativan as needed. Too many meds but amazingly enough she is doing very well..except for car rides and with her aide but the aide/school is another whole issue! She is only on .5mgs of klonopin in the morning but right now that is just what she needs. We tried to take it away and she has more anxiety. The tegretol is for moods too. When we added that she leveled right out. But she has to have the klonopin with it. Zonegran was the one causing bipolar symptoms. And more seizures. Amazingly by lowering it(and that is what caused the "fight" with the Hershey dr!) the manic left but when we added tegretol we had breakthru seizures because the tegretol ate up the zonegran so we added Keppra which stopped that. We had added ritalin a long time ago and that cut down the extremely impulsive behavior. We tried super nuthera. And b vitamins/mag, dmg and tmg. They all make her so hyper. It is a guessing game sometimes but I figure we will hit the right combination sometime!LOL! Elaine Elaine, What med was the seizure med? do you have her off of it now? Guest guest
Elaine, they tried Depacote (sp)? on J about a year ago and he took one dose and lost it!!!!!! He tore the livingroom apart! We knew ro never give him that again. J is just taking aitiavin right now but the bipokar behaviour is bad. He has been agressive to me alot. He will be acting nice then out of the blue BOOM! he will run up to me and hit me! I took a "Test" on this bipolar site.... http://www.bipolarchild.com it had about 60 quiestions and J had about 40 of them! I don't know what to do about it. I printed out the test and I am taking in to the Dr. next week. Lois Re: Aitiavin-Lorazepam-How to take them off of it

Guest guest
Lois, I may be entirely wrong, and you know your son better than anyone, but my thinking is that JJ is reacting to the Ativan like Karac reacted to the Xanax. Ativan and Xanax are both Benzodiazepines. In the beginning Xanax was helpful to Karac in overcoming the TD, but after a while it caused the same kind of behavior that you are describing. Even when Karac was down to .5mg of Xanax at night, he was still experiencing that behavior. You should see the scars on my arms, but since he has been off of it entirely; I haven't had one aggressive episode. He has had a few brief anxiety attacks, but they have been brief and no aggression with them. It has been about a year, and It still seems too good to be true. I think it takes a lot of courage to take these kids off of a med that has at one time been helpful. I don't think I would have had the courage to completely stop it. I was fortunate; Karac finally refused to take it and would spit it out. I admire you for having the courage to stick with it, and I hope you have a happy outcome.
