Hey Y'all. . . (just back from Texas)

So, I am planning to do a lot more house calls and I'm

putting together my "black bag." If ya ever need a good

one just go to a Home Depot or some such store and

look at electrician' s bags. Lots of pockets and very

durable and cheap (mine was $29.99). A long, long, long,

long time ago there used to be standing room only lectures

at our local hospital on "What to carry in the black bag," but

no more. . . so. . . what do y'all think should be in there???

My ideas so far:

stethoscope

BP cuffs

oto/opthalmoscopes

thermometer

speculum

stuff to repair lacerations

UA dips

Preg tests

Strep tests

Emergen-C

PulseOx

All kindsa fun drugs:

Predisone

Vicodin

Phenergan

Cipro

Keflex

Amox

PenVK

Motrin

Tylenol

Benadryl

Epi-pen

Other ideas?

Looking forward to IMP CAMP!! Can't wait to meet everyone.

I love lists! Since I'm just back from a month on an island 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts (go ahead, hate me), may I suggest tweezers for removing ticks? There is a special tool for tick removal, and I wish I'd had it! ( it was discussed a while ago, does anyone remember where to get one?) Tweezers will do also.Other items to include in your bag:glovesdoxycycline (for those engorged ticks)If including fluoro strips, add a small black light. Is there a flashlight black light?KathleenRocephin Antibiotic drops for eyes and earsBionix Ear currettes, disposableSterile Q-tipsFluoro strips for corneal abrasion diagnosisDermabondBacterial culture swabslidocaine and a scalpel for I+Dsuture removal kitSteri-stripsFrom: Pamela Wible <roxywiblecomcast (DOT) net>To: Sent: Sunday, August 2, 2009 1:21:27 PMSubject: What to carry in the BLACK BAG? Use a wrist Omron BP cuff, very small and works for obese great. Zofran iv

better and there is a cheap version, toradol better than opiates in a bag, have

some depomedrol and a urine culture vial, depending on the patient a straight

cath, plenty of KY and gloves.

Good grief, Dr Antonucci. How big was that carry on?Hey that makes me think. If one is carrying a practice around, why not one of those small roller travel bags. I could get a lot in one of those. But then again it might take me a while to find it and unravel it. k You runnin a whole practice or what, out of that black bag?I make house calls I bring a thermometer my stethoscope a phone my lap top maybe some kind of light maybe some gloves... my eyes and ears. This is a house call or a house based practice? I live rural and do lots of outdoors stuff, so I have a black bag and a back

pack.

Black bag is the usual stuff with stethscope, BP cuff, thermometer, otoscope

that runs on D cells (got that when I went to Haiti, easier than pull ins in

other countries), currettes, culturettes, pulse ox ( we live at 8800 ft). Strep

test, now flu test. NO drugs to speak of except tylenol, advil, vicodin and an

epipen.

In the back pack/saddlebag for backcountry horse trips I have

disposable suture kit and extra scalpals, lidocaine w/, suture material

Lots of

gauze

Other instruments for removing fish hooks etc, although leatherman works OK.

Cast padding and materials for splints

Kelfex-this really is painful IM, but it gets the job done

Betadine and benadryl

Why the emergency c? should at least care something that works.

Great list. Remember that you can use eye drops in the ears, but not vice versa. "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete"- Buckminster FullerTo: Sent: Sunday,
