Guest guest
KD, I don't know if I asked you this, but daycare is a very viable alternative. Here in the states the Senior Centers usually have a transportation system for very little money. I put Mom on the bus and she traveled to her day care from 10 am to 3pm and an extra hour for travel, which I did 2 days a week. She got some social time lunch and scheduled activity. That program was also funded and I paid a part of the fees we could afford. They eventually got some other funded and she had her shower there everyday she went. It really helped with the showers and I laughed at them when they asked if she wanted to do it. I told them they wouldn't get her in the shower. Was I ever wrong. They had a very skilled person and Mom never had a problem that they didn't handle. The Alzheimers Association is available and people from this group might want to use the resources they offer. They don't have a lot, but they did try and get vols' to come to the house 3 hours a week. I had one with Mom. She stayed here with Mom and I had to leave to get away, but I planned my shopping and visiting time while the vol was here. I also attended lots of their educational meetings and learned a lot that was helpful. Just some thoughts. And I might assure you that I was the biggest skeptic about Mom ever going and enjoying anything like this. And she never did let me know she enjoyed it. They use to laugh and say she was a changed person as soon as I came into the room and she started her complaining about everything. I know there are programs that do even more things than the one we went to. We had a wonderful Jewish program here and I couldn't afford it and we were not Jewish or she may have been able to go there. They did actual trips to the ice cream shop and baseball games (for those able to go) and lots of other things. Donna R Re: mom
