How long did you take to wean him off the resperdal? And was it after that that you weaned him off of the Proponolol? J was a mess today! We went shopping and he was all over the place and loud. I see the Dr. in 2 weeks. he is a nice man BUT knows nothing about autism.......Lois

We have to remember that there really are no medications that are on the market that are specifically

made for "Autism". Autism is different in every child/person with it and therefore the doctors all

treat symptoms, behaviors and moods. It really is a hit or miss situation when you dont have

lab work or specific test results identifying the specific impairments and causes. I was told early on

that many times the meds work differently on our children with autism because the brain is different

structurally or functioning in a different capacity. Some have low IQs, some have some form of epilepsy, some have sensory deficiencies and extremes, some have communication differences, etc. So many different pieces to the puzzle.

We have been trying and using meds all through puberty for mood instability, aggression, self injury etc --not really knowing why these things are happening??? I think its pretty much guess work for most

doctors--just using what they know to give our kids and us some relief. It is very frustrating, I know and all we can do at this point is "trial and error" and hope that something turns up to be effeective to some degree.

If only there was an effective treatment and cure!!! In my dreams!
