Hey Kirk,

I know you addressed this e-mail to Dan, but I read it anyway. You have a special way

with words Kirk, I am still smiling, and will off and on as I think of your "camping trip"

as I go through this day. Thanks for sharing!!

By the way, we used to camp a lot, and we were rained out most of the time too. I will

never forget the one time we camped way up in Northern WIsconsin, and we didn't

know we were supposed to dig a "trench" around the tent in case of rain. Well, we

had no trench and the water from the rain almost "carried our tent away" with us in

it...also a big bear slept next to the tent the first part of the night. We could hear him

making "bear noises," and he pushed his big body up next to the tent and slept there

for several "long" hours. We finally took the flashlight & grabbed what we needed,

and slept the rest of the night in the back of our station wagon. It was my husband,

myself and my two children ages 9 & 10 from a first marriage. Many years later,

and that is one time Jon & Darla remember as one of the "fun" times! Strange how

the times that don't go as planned are the times we remember the most!

Hoping you have a better than usual day!

from Wisconsin,

Tricia

Dan, I found your rain. It is in Pa, and it made for a long weekend of camping!!

I guess it is par for the course that it decided to rain most of the time this weekend as my family, my neighbors and a few other friends went camping this weekend. We camped down by Sunbury, Pa on the Susquehanna River. I have camped there in the past, and love it as I can fish, the kids have lots to do and it is a relaxed environment.

We were stuck in construction on the way which was no fun, but we did finally arrive with some time to spare before dark. Well, we all set up the tents in the rain and mud. We had to resort to taking some gas out of my boat to facilitate starting Mr. Fire as all of the wood I brought down was drenched. I do love the 10 foot flames!

We were to go out fishing at first light on Saturday. I woke up at 5:00 AM, but went back to bed as it was still pouring out. I got backup at 7:00 AM and found the igniter on my gas grill decided that it was a good day to die. I dug out some matches, and was very impressed at how high that initial "poof" of propane can be. Thank God I have short hair!!! We did finally get on the water at 8:30 AM, and much to my dismay I had an obstacle course of logs and other various debris that was floating on down the river as the river was now high and muddy. So much for the fishing part, although I think my neighbor wants a boat now.

On Saturday it stopped raining about 10:00 AM. I stored the boat and dedicated myself to making sure the kids had a good time. We all had ice cream and played miniature golf. We also were swimming for a while. I started to get a headache about 3:00 PM and went to lay down. I awoke at about 7:00 to find out my neighbor really can cook a steak! They all ate about 6:00, and wrapped mine up for me. I took my oldest son and his friend miniature golfing again as that is all they talked about, and was back at the site by 8:00. My wife put the kids to sleep, and the fire was in good shape. I had a blast as almost everyone except me at the campsites were loaded! Drunk people are fun to watch once in a while. I saw people stumble and fall, including one guy who tried to ride his kids skate board. He has to be sore today, especially the parts of him that hit the ground HARD! It was amusing. About 9:30 we heard thunder in the distance, and by midnight it was pouring again.

This morning was one of those FUBAR'd mornings. It was still raining hard, and I had to light the grill again! I didn't blow myself up, and cooked up all of the remaining eggs, bacon, sausage etc.... We ate in the tents, as it was the only way to keep the food dry.

I took the tent down, and my wife's friends tent down, and looked like I was mud wrestling when I was done. I was covered. I wiped out more than once walking in the mud (God I want my balance back!!!) and literally started to throw everything into the back of my truck. As soon as I got home I had to put up the tent to wash it out and let it dry, put out all of the camping gear and clean it, etc...... I might add it may not dry for a while, as it is still pouring out!! I can't even cover my boat as it is drenched, and I hate that "mildew" smell I will get if I cover it while it is wet.

Well, I was done with that by 5:00. I just woke up about an hour ago, around 1:00 AM. I need to remember this, as every single time my wife and I have ever camped it has done nothing but rain. Adding two kids to the mix seems to have made the rain Gods even more aware that we are camping, as it rains twice as hard.

Well, have a good one. Kirk.

P.S. I had some fun on the ride down. We were stuck in traffic for well over an hour. I love construction. There was no where to go, and nothing was moving. Well, the guy behind me thought he was special, and liked his horn and had fun telling me he was going to hit my boat if I didn't move. I didn't even reply as I was in a good mood. When we finally got through the construction he passed me and waved his "flag" at me, and spewed some words......I decided to have fun with him..... I gunned it, and as soon as I got along side of him and waved, he took off....I backed off as my boat didn't seem to like being towed at 90....... About 40 minutes later I arrived at the campground, and went to the office to register........I saw a guy do a double take as I pulled up......I found my "friend"!!! Well, I did say something along the line of where I might stick his "flag" if he were to come near me, and he stayed away. I had to ask him what he thought he was going to gain by going around me, but I got no reply. God giving me that moment was like me giving my dog a "cookie". It was a nice treat. I also know that my "idiot magnet" is still working. I attract them!

Kirk.

Hi Kirk!

It's your neighbor to the North of you.

I to am a lover of camping. Have you ever tried Slumber Valley in Meshoppen? Very nice quiet place with a creek to fish in. The Susquehanna also runs along side of the town.

Tricia, I have been a lover of camping since I was a kid. I also like the tent style, as they are convienient and easy to store.

For years I used to camp on islands on the Susquehanna River up here with friends. We did this every Memorial Day weekend until I became married. We started doing it when I was 13. We had a tent, a cooler, a lantern and a stove. There were 3 of us that year, and it rained the whole time. The river was rising, but still very easily crossed. The tent I had was my fathers heavy duty canvass tent. Well, my right arm looked like it was one of "Arnold Schwartzenegger's" when I was done carrying it. It must have weighed two hundred pounds, and I carried it a full mile and change, and had one side of the cooler in my left hand. I got home to find no one there.....my mother became paranoid and had search and rescue teams out looking for us!!! When I walked back to the river to tell them all was well, my mom almost fainted.

We continued to do this every year save one when the river was flooded. When we got older and added boats to the mix, it was truly a blast. It became a big event, with our peak coming in 1994 when we had 17 guys and 12 boats, including one just for kegs of brewski!!! We would strategically plan our trip so we would be near a beer distributer on the second day, as we usually would wipe out the two 1/4 kegs on the first night. We would always have a bass tournament of sorts, and I won 1/2 of them, while my best friend won the other 1/2.

I wish it never ended, as I have some of my fondest memories from these trips. Thankfully we took plenty of pictures for most of them, including some neat "drunk" shots of various friends. I have one of my best friend passed out sitting on a log, drenched from the pouring rain. He awoke to eat a dozen eggs, 1 lb of bacon and all of the sausage we had left. He also ate the better part of a loaf of bread. I never saw anyone eat so much in my life.

The part that amuses me the most is that from 1984 to 1995 we only had one rain free weekend!!! We really didn't care, as it was a great time, all the time. We even had a dedicated boat that we painted camoflauge and had bright neon letters down the side spelling out the boat's name, which was "Floating Deth". (No, that isn't a typo, it stands for something. ) The boat was a $50.00 special that we had to patch every other use. It was a 1972 Sears fiberglass nightmare. It saw its' demise when it started to crack in half in 1997. I am amazed it never sank.

Have a good one, Kirk.
