Tell him it is not nice. Talk to him before you go in the store. Keep him distracted. Feed him in the store. Give him a list of groceries to find. Let him sit in the back of the shopping cart w/ an electronic game and zone out. :) ??? :)

mine is when I take my 5 year old son shopping, he is very observant of EVERYTHING he sees and just blurts out stuff that is inappropriate. e.g. baby got no shoes, baby got no socks. this is within earshot of the mother of the child and sometimes we get strange looks. any advice as to how to break him out of this behaviour?

for that, I have a box of tissues on the kitchen bench, within easy reach for my kids but not accessible by my 17 month old son who would just pull all the tissues out of the box. as soon as I hear them sniffle, I ask them to go to get a tissue and blow their nose then bin the tissue as it has germs and is yuck. so far it is working.

It worked with our son - eventually.  Just before his 16th birthday

he got tired of both parents nagging him to "blow your nose!" and

finally gave in.  Before then, it was just constant sniffling

whenever he had a cold.

After every single cold/flu/upper respiratory yuck, my daughter ends up sniffing for weeks or months after. I agree, it is SO annoying!

We do the same thing, but it's become a "tick" or something. We make him leave the table, blow his nose, then go wash his hands, then the next second he's doing it again and has to wash his hands again! Everyone is always sick in our house and he even has a booger wall next to his bed where he picks his nose and wipes the boogers on the wall.....lovely right?

I agree with , I just tell my daughter that it's rude and hurts people's feelings. Keeping him otherwise distracted may work wonders, as if he's like mine he won't "get" why it's rude. My daughter's annoying habits are the obsessive conversations. She will ONLY talk about her obsessions which are Sonic X, Animaniacs, invisible friends, something funny her friends' said, or whatever she's reading at the time. She will talk incessantly and doesn't care if you aren't interested, she will still talk and gets upset if you don't pay attention. It's so bad that for Mother's Day her gift to me was to not mention Sonic X or Animaniacs for the entire day (at least in my presence). It was not easy.

I LOVE THAT Mothers Day Gift! My son is the same way--doesn't matter if what he is talking about holds any interest for anyone else. He just barrels through on his topic. He will open his eyes in the morning and his first words out of his mouth are on his fave topics and it never stops. My ears bleed. Speaking of tic's--there is a high comorbidity of tic syndromes and kids on the spectrum. When my son was 7 we went to WDW. When we got home, he was coughing. I thought he had a cold. He coughed for months--I took him to the doc, the pulmonologist, etc. Nothing. Then he developed some head bobs, shoulder shrugs, chin movements--it finally dawned on me he had Tourettes Syndrome. Took him for an eval--sure enough. In fact, he's the poster child for it--onset at 7, high tic levels at age 10. Sigh. So sometimes the sniffs aren't from allergies or colds or any physical reason. Turns out his cough really was (and is) a tic.

We do the same thing, but it's become a "tick" or something.

Sure, my son's most annoying behavior right now is biting his hands, fingers, toes, eating his boogers, picking his nose. He doesn't know what do do with down time w/ his hands. That and th sniffle....sniff, sniff, sniff.....ugh! Drives me nuts! Snif... Louie has been taught by his behaviorist to put his hands in his pockets if he doesn't know what to do with them. He'll use a tissue if we give him a packet of them, but that one took years to instill. Now, he says he puts his hands in his pockets to keep himself out of trouble. :)! I guess we can't expect too much I made a poster for Louie with my computer graphics program that outlined a series of steps he had to perform in the morning. Wash your face, brush your hair, wash your hands, have breakfast, brush your teeth, wash your face and hands, and have a good day! Later, we extended that basic list to be things to do after every meal. It was in color with representative cartoony illustrations (a grimacing faucet, a hairbrush, a tooth brush, a bowl of cereal) because Louie responded well to cartoon things. We started this when Louie was 12. He still has an uses that poster, and he's 31 now. :) Worked like a charm for us; you might give it a try! I bought my son an electric toothbrush, which he seems to like better.  Since he does a poor job on his teeth, I also got him bubble gum flavored mouthwash, which he will take if reminded.

I get so tired of the teeth fight. I will physically do it for him if i have to but geez does it get old. The hair we solve with a buzz cut.

My son hasn't brushed his hair for years.  It does have to be kept clean and relatively neat, though.  Fortunately, the 'scruffy' look is still in at the moment.  I am much less willing to give up on the teeth brushing though.

I have a hard time getting my 12 year old son to either comb his hair, or brush his teeth.

Funny, my son is almost obsessed with combing his hair!! And really he doesn't need to because it grows pin straight and he likes it short so it sort of just goes into place automatically - but he is always combing it! But the teeth, that's another story! And and 13, he's already taller than me, so me doing it for him isn't an option! We just keep talking about it, and eventually he goes into the bathroom and brushes them - not sure how well he does, but it's a start anyway!

we have two that are on the spectrum. our 7 yr old doesn’t like to bathe or brush her teeth or brush her hair, take care of her clothes or clean her room. our 12 yr old doesn’t like to brush his hair, so we shave it, he doesn’t like to brush his teeth, and he constantly seems to have an attitude. we don’t get annoyed by the tics anymore now that we know they are tics. his tics were sniffing, clearing of the throat, eye blinking, mouth moving, hopping, shoulder shrugging, chin moving, that is about all that we have noticed so far.

I've always been a bathing nut! When the dr. said you don't need to bathe him but once a wk or twice at the most when they are babies I ignored that and did what I wanted. Infant acne, diaper rash, ezcema, everything was better when they were bathed once a day and rubbed down with an oil, thick lotion or even (i know this sounds bad) but Crisco! :) So, my son gives me no issues. He can be in and out in three mins. like a military shower, or he could spend a 1/2 hr. in there if I let him. My daughter has seizures so I have to watch her b/c she's seized in the tub once, but he gets in, gets wet, I put some soap on his head and on his poof and he's good to go. He brushes his teeth in the shower at night and before school, after breakfast. He is stimulated by the electronic toothbrush so he doesn't complain........buzzzz.....buzzzz...buzzzz....:)

My son hates, hates, hates bathing too!

we have two that are on the spectrum. our 7 yr old doesn’t like to bathe or brush her teeth or brush her hair, take care of her clothes or clean her room. our 12 yr old doesn’t like to brush his hair, so we shave it, he doesn’t like to brush his teeth, and he constantly seems to have an attitude. we don’t get annoyed by the tics anymore now that we know they are tics. his tics were sniffing, clearing of the throat, eye blinking, mouth moving, hopping, shoulder shrugging, chin moving, that is about all that we have noticed so far.

We just keep talking about it, and eventually he goes into the bathroom and brushes them - not sure how well he does, but it's a start anyway!

mine is when I take my 5 year old son shopping, he is very observant of EVERYTHING he sees and just blurts out stuff that is inappropriate. e.g. baby got no shoes, baby got no socks. this is within earshot of the mother of the child and sometimes we get strange looks.

any advice as to how to break him out of this behaviour?

I'm not sure if an electric toothbrush would make it better or worse. he will finally use kid mint toothpaste (the strawberry and watermelon stuff wasn't really getting it done).

Jenn

Persistence does pay off - sometimes :) Now if I could just get him to clean his teeth without being told. Or keep up to date with homework. I guess we can't expect too much

16 years of that?

OMG!

that is severe!

It worked with our son - eventually. Just before his 16th birthday he got tired of both parents nagging him to "blow your nose!" and finally gave in. Before then, it was just constant sniffling whenever he had a cold.

for that, I have a box of tissues on the kitchen bench, within easy reach for my kids but not accessible by my 17 month old son who would just pull all the tissues out of the box. as soon as I hear them sniffle, I ask them to go to get a tissue and blow their nose then bin the tissue as it has germs and is yuck. so far it is working.

Sure, my son's most annoying behavior right now is biting hishands, fingers, toes, eating his boogers, picking his nose. He doesn't know what do do with down time w/ his hands. That and th sniffle....sniff, sniff, sniff.....ugh! Drives me nuts! Snif...

great ideas. I will try them out next time we go out.

Tell him it is not nice. Talk to him before you go in the store. Keep him distracted. Feed him in the store. Give him a list of groceries to find. Let him sit in the back of the shopping cart w/ anelectronic game and zone out. :) ???:)

Louie hated baths until he found out about showers. :) Then it was hard to get him out! :)Annie annie@..."Anything that happens enough times to irritate you will happen at least once more." ---- Tom ParkinsI've always been a bathing nut!
