Hi Joy,

Wow! That's incredible. How severe was your child's ocd, and was

cbt done?

Thanks.

Hi Barb,

We have been using Pfeiffer for 11 months for my now 9 y.o. dd. She

also takes Omega 3 & 6 plus some herbal preparations. She was on

Luvox for 12 months but I took her off that last December. Taking her

off Luvox made no difference, in fact she is better without it (touch

wood)!

I give my daughter Inositol powder(B8), 5HTP, fish oil, B Complex,

multivitamin, Lecithin, calcium/magnesium/zinc, taurine, and

probiotics. I noticed a huge decrease in her OCD symptoms with the

Inositol and 5HTP. The calcium/mag/zinc and taurine help reduce her

tics. We have also used Native remedies when her OCD was at it's

worse and I do think it helped.

Hi Colleen,

That's great to hear. What is your daughters weight and what

quantities of inositol and 5HTP are you giving? Are you doing this

on your own, or do you have a naturopath or other doc on board

advising? Is your daughter taking any medications, doing cbt? In

other words do you think the main impact is the supplements?

Thanks.

Barb,

We, too give Native Remedies, Mindsoothe, Jr and Purecalm with amazing

results. My son has been relatively symptom free for 1 1/2 years. We weaned

him off of the Native Remedies with no relapses at all. He now takes Focus

Factor vitamins, Coromega, Calcium/Magnesium, Vitamin B Complex, and Zinc. He

is under the care of Dr. Mark Stengler, naturopath, in San Diego, CA. We have

done all tests through the mail and all appts over the phone.

Kind Regards,

My daughter is 11 1/2 and weighs about 105-110 lbs. I give her one

teaspoon of Inositol per day (2,200mg). I give her 50 mg of 5HTP.

We have been dealing with OCD and tics since she was 5, but last

August she was at her very worst, with really bad intrusive thoughts

that she had never experienced before. At that time I was giving

her 50 mg of 5HTP twice per day and two tsp. of Inositol and began to

see a

big difference within the first week. I am not giving her the

supplements under a physician, although my physician is aware. I

have gotten all of this information from other parents who have used

the supplements with success, AND I researched A LOT also. When my

daughter has a BIG flareup we also do a round of antibiotics, which

usually helps. She has PANDAS and although a lot of times tests

negative for strep, the OCD/tics respond to the antibiotic. I firmly

believe she has strep elsewhere in her body when she has a flareup

that responds to antibiotics.

That is a great story to hear . I have more questions for you

now... How old is your son? How severe was his ocd? What tests did

you have done to establish deficeicies(sp?). Did the ND in CA

specialize in anxiety disorders/brain based stuff?

We have many alternative doctors here and I have done many things

since he was 2yr (he did not have ocd until 15). I do believe there

is an underlying deficeincy, but the best way to establish and treat

this is unclear to me. Have spent a lot of money over the years and

want to make good choices now...

Any other thoughts you have would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks Colleen. I will do my research too, but it is good to hear

from others who have had successes. Interesting about the

antibiotics use. I know our son is a strep carrier and keep

wondering if this impacts. Not really well understood.

Just information gathering at this point. Thanks so much for your

input! Glad your daughter continues to do well.

Just wondering if your child has ever been on antibiotics and if you

noticed a diference in behaviors. Being a strep carrier in children

is common and physicians will say it doesn't need to be , autism,

ADHD) then the strep can really affect their behavior and should be

treated. This is common in kids with PANDAS, but I have also noticed

that kids with OCD and tics that have NOT been diagnosed with PANDAS

seem to either be strep carriers or get frequent strep infections. I

do not believe that this is just a coincidence. I think strep plays

a bigger part in OCD and Tourette's than is known at this point.

Colleen,

When went on an antibiotic for strep, I hopefully looked for a

difference with his OCD. This was probably the first/only time he'd

been on an antibiotic since OCD began. But, nope, no luck for us

there. OCD had increased with strep infection but no change over the

long run to his OC problems.

Agreed. What to do about it is the question.

Our son has not been on antibiotics since childhood when he would get

repeated ear infections, then throat infections(not strep though).

We had no behaviors associated at the time, and he has not had any

throat or other infections since diagnosis. But when I read about

PANDAS and strep carriers I did ask. I still wonder if the brain

continues to be " attacked " by the virus/bacteria if it is in the

body, or if the " damage " is done so to speak.

Lots of questions, not so many conclusive answers...

Not sure if you are familiar with oregano oil, it is a natural anti

viral/baterial/fungal. If I thought he would take it I would try.

Tastes like turpentine, probably sends the bugs running!

Awww, Barb, I use oregano oil (for my gum problems). Must be your

brand, LOL, mine's not bad. Yep, if I thought it would help, I'd

try getting to drink some. Also grapefruit seed extract.

It's " wild " oregano oil. I wonder if that makes it more intense?!!!

What is your brand?

Hi Breda,

I must have missed your post, just found it. Could you explain what

is Pfeiffer? I thought this was an insitute. Could you clarify what

your daughter is taking and where you got it?

Thanks.

As much as I love my website www.smallchanges.info/ I also have to

tell you to check out www.latitudes.org/ my website doesn't talk much

about vitamins and supplements (yet) but latitudes has a wealth of

knowledge from other parents and it's editor about supplements that

have been found to be beneficial for different types of disorders.

just do a key word search on what your looking for and it will bring

up all type of discussions on your topic. This web site is what saved

me 2 years ago and gave me so much helpful information on supplements.

Good luck!

Hi Barb,

The Pfeiffer Institute is an American-based company founded by Dr

Bill Walsh some 30 years ago. It works on the premise that many

psychological problems are caused by vitamin deficiences. Tests are

run including blood, urine, and hair analysis. It appears that people

with OCD have large zinc deficiencies (which my daughter did). It has

taken us 9 months to get these up. After test results come through a

specific supplement regime is given to the patient. The supplements

are compounded (individualised) as each person needs varying amounts

depending on test results. My daughter takes magnesium, calcium,

zinc, methionine, B6, and vit C. However, the doses are very specific

to her individual needs. The vitamins are combined into capsules so

she only needs to take 4 capsules in the morning and 5 in the evening

(that also includes the Omega 3 & 6). G.P.s are specifically trained

to analyse the test results. We live on the Gold Coast in Australia

and are just lucky that there is one doctor who has had this

training. This treatment was recommended to my by someone whose son

has Paranoid Schizophrenia and who responded well to it,

Thanks Breda. I think I have found an MD locally who does this sort

of testing and does supplements too. So I will make an appointment.

Next step will be to get our son there...

I have read this research and was aware of the concept of deficienies

contributing to mental illness. I have followed this avenue for

myself and had results as medication has not been helpful for me.

We had not had great success with what we had tried alternatively for

our son and felt there was no choice but to go with medication.

Since that has led to other challenges I want to try some

alternatives again. Here's hoping... I know others who have tried

this and it has not helped, so I think it is individual, like most

things.

I am glad that you have had such great success. Thanks for sharing

this.

-I agree, the web site lattitudes.org is wonderful and it is where I

learned SO much about different supplements that are really helping

my daughter.

Well, we have decided to try the alternative remedies method before embarking on

our journey into drug land.

Does anyone have any ideas/ vague recommendations about quantities we should be

using for the following:

My DS is 14 years old and 110 pounds.

Inositol powder

DHA (omega 3)

5 HTP

Many thanks,

Joyce in Seattle

Hi Joyce, well first I'd begin with only one supplement for a few

weeks before adding to it.

I'd try inositol powder first - just my preference since it did help

my son once and has helped others. I think you could safely add the

omega3 after a couple weeks, don't see a problem with adding it.

But hold off on the 5-HTP for longer. (or vice-versa if you wanted

to begin with 5HTP, hold off on the inositol a few weeks)

As to dosage - we got up to over 13 grams. But some have had

results with as little as 6 or less. So really during the weeks you

are just building up to an initial trial dosage. And, as with

prescription medication, it really takes WEEKS to build up to a good

dose and then let that dose have its " trial period " . Like with

Celexa, my son seemed to have it kick in more around the 16th week

(!) I think. Same when we first tried inositol; seemed the longer

he was on it, the more effective it became but it took WEEKs before

I saw any results; I believe some have lucked up and had

prescription and even inositol help the first month!

LOL, sorry I have no concrete answers as to " how much " or " how

long. " We have tried this past year: inositol powder, 5-HTP,

theanine, GABA, St 's Wort, fish oil...lots of stuff. And I had

to give each a few weeks trial. The inositol, 5-HTP and SJW, which I

had the most hope for to help, we gave at least around a 12 week

trial for each, hoping he would feel " something. " Nope. The others

I guess I was rushing a bit and we tried at least 8 weeks. None

helped, sigh!

Well very quick thoughts and typing this a.m. I'll have to look

back at what dosage we tried 5HTP at.
