The people I've spoken to at Aerogarden have told me that it's mostly people

in the South with tropical weather.

Our bugs don't die.

Disney uses ladybugs in The Land pavilion to control gnats, aphids,

whiteflys, etc....

I haven't tried ladybugs... my dogs are already snapping at the gnats which

I'm fighting right now...

I did read an article in the Orlando Sentinel that said dryer sheets repel

insects - the article was specifically referring to roaches but it said that

they have also been reported to work on other insects.

I am happy to report that I put a dryer sheet on top of my bananas yesterday

and there's no gnats flying around my bananas.

I might put some dryer sheets next to my Aerogardens when I restart them.

I don't want to discourage anyone thinking about getting an Aerogarden. I

had two wonderful crops from mine before the whiteflies found them.

AND... I do live in Florida.

When I was staying with a friend in Florida, I remember occasionally seeing

these cute little geckos that would somehow get in the house and stay.He had the

house sprayed all the time for insects, but the geckos seemed to be permanent

residents. I love lizards, but somehow think the cats would give them

trouble. In the Fall and Winter here in Somerset County NJ, we have a LOT of

trouble with Asian Stink bug infestations. They are perfectly harmless beetles

that do not like the cold, so they sneak into your home and basically buzz

around lights, walk along the ceilings, and occasionally drown themselves in

water in the sink, fish tank, or houseplant pots. The only infestation I am

really concerned about at the moment are the long-tailed white mealybugs on my

orchids!  nin NJ where it is NOT snowing again

lol I used to live in Mississippi & they have love bugs there & I guess its a

coastal thing... Louisiana has them also! Yep there are thousands of them all

getting it ON! LOL

Oh, they were Geckos (like the Geico commercial little lizard?) I will never

forget when I was sitting outside on a lounge chair soaking up the sun (while

visiting my parents yet again). They convinced me that there would be no bugs

around me that day. They sprayed (one can only imagine what I was exposed to)

And they were CONTINUALLY exposed to all those years ago.

Anyway, I'm sitting on this lounge chair when all of a sudden something flies

right over me. From the right side OVER ME, to the left side. I remember my

head going from right to left.

I glance over to my right and sure enough there were these THINGS (lizards), by

the hundreds, all gathering up to fly over me. I froze in that chair, started

screaming, my father comes running out and starts getting hysterical.

I run in the house and of course they followed me. I locked myself in the

bathroom until my parents said it was safe to come out.

Just imagine, a grown woman hiding in the bathroom because there are LIZARDS in

the house.

Then (and you will all love this one), my father says " I want to show you the

beauty that is Florida, let's go for a ride "

I said to them " Anything that gets me away from bugs, Palmettos, lizards, but

I'm not going outside, bring the car into the garage and I'll get in the car

from there " .

So my father gets the car, brings it into the garage and we all get in.

Now I'm from the East. I don't know anything about what flies around in Florida.

I never noticed what was on the front windshield of my dad's care. I don't drive

so I thought it was part of the front of the car.

We are riding and all of a sudden we run into this TREMENDOUS bunch of flying

" whatever they were " .

I'm looking at my parents and they are sitting there (with dad driving), like

this is an occurence that happens every day.

I don't say a word because I don't want to sound like an idiot. But when the

THINGS start hitting the windshield and I hear 'SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, well, I had

to open my mouth.

I said 'I beg your pardon but there are thousands of things hitting the

windshield and YOU DON'T SEEM TO CARE " .

My father laughs and says " Oh, those???? Those are LOVE BUGS "

I said 'those are WHAT?? " and he says " oh, you never heard of LOVE BUGS?? "

I then said " what the h is a love bug "

Then he hits me with:

" Oh they come out two times a year (luckily I picked one of those times), and

they are always mating "

I said " what do you mean they are always mating? "

He says " when you get out of the car, you'll see " Then he explains what always

mating meant.

We land back in front of the house. I get out " looking around for Palmetto bugs

to land on me.

I take a look at the car and there are MILLIONS of these creatures on the

windshield and every part of the car. My father hoses off the car and then I

noticed the LOVE BUG SHIELD that was on the car.

Well, I looked at my parents and I said " You two are out of your minds "

They laughed their heads off. Believe me I did not laugh.

I went home soon after and it was a LONG LONG time before I ever went to Florida

again.

Jeez, palmetto bugs, love bugs, lizards.

I should move to Alaska. I hate the cold but I bet they don't have bugs.

Sometimes mother nature is our best friend. I take my hibiscus outside when they

get white flies and the weather won't kill the hibiscus. Strong wind, rain, and

sunshine kill off the little buggers. The hibiscus are invigorated and the white

flies are gone. It's just my being lazy or too cold conditions for the hibiscus

that keeps me from doing this more often. A dilute dishwashing soap solution

wash is a big help also. Strong oscillating fans help, strong light, slightly

stronger nutrients electrolites solutions for hydroponics(so the plants are less

tender), frequent rain washes, and so on. Make their miserable white fly life

miserable and they go away. Hope this helps.

I've done everything suggested at the 3 weblinks EXCEPT the one using Vicks Vapo

Rub. I tried Vaseline but not Vicks.

Soaps work for a few hours... but it doesn't get rid of them.

I've made up numerous concoctions using onions, peppers, various herbs...

As the author wrote, white flies are resilient.
