Subject: glasses

Went today for my annual or supposed to be annual checkup of my eyes,

because of the diabetes. The doc said there is absolutely no sign of

diabetes in

either of my eyes.

Hi Pearl~

I had my eyes tested last week..It had been about 7 years since I had seen

an eye doctor..I was curious..Because I was diabetic too. I thought maybe

something from those days would have carried over..To my very pleasant

surprise..The Doctor told me my eyes were in perfect health..I do need glasses

to read, and now for distance. I am going to need bifocals..But she wants me to

spend the money on the progressive lenses...I asked what my eye site was..She

said 20/30...With a little astigmatism in my left eye...But she said..The reason

I am having trouble with my vision is my age...OK I liked that better then it

being diabetic reasons...Now saving for the lenses..Kind of expensive...

either of my eyes. He was very impressed. So was I. That was one of the main

reasons I had the surgery, as I was afraid of losing my sight. I had such severe

neuropathy in my hands and feet that I felt it would go for my eyes next.

Now my A1C test is so low and now he says there is absolutely no signs of

diabetes in my eyes. Sure I have a little bit of cataracts, but who doesn't at

my

age. Changed my driving prescription a little, first time in over five years,

so I don't feel bad about that. I just came away so happy that there was

nothing wrong with my eyes. That the diabetes was not there and doing damage. I

knew I was not having any more problems with diabetes, but was not sure if

past problems would have caused problems. Now I can rest easy. Just made me

feel great to know my eyes are good. I don't need glasses to read with, only for

distance, which is the opposite of most people I know. I kid one of my

daughters that I will hold the paper and she can walk out onto the patio, just

so

she can read it.

I went to the dentist last week and got two gumline fillings done. First

work I have had done, other than a wisdom tooth removal in about fifteen years.

I hope my teeth don't start giving me problems now. I feel very lucky to have

a mouthful of just my own teeth at my age. I do have one cap, otherwise they

are my own. I don't go to the dentist, except for a real reason. Seems

everytime I do they cause more problems than what I had before I went in. I have

no

had them clean them in over twenty years, and it will probably be that many

more before I do. I keep them clean myself. They always just hurt me. In fact

when he did these gumline fillings he kept asking if they had hurt before,

and I kept saying no. Then he tells me they are going to hurt and I may very

well have to have them taken out. Made me wonder why I even let him in my

mouth. I guess I don't have much trust in them.

Glad your jeans make your butt look great Marta. We all need to find that

piece of clothing that makes us feel that it makes us look great. I will be

looking for it after this surgery. Right now I am not buying anything. I look

ever so often and then think, nope, you don't know what size you will be in a

short while. Just wait a bit. So I am looking forward to the new things later.

OMG - how wonderful that your eyes are fine!!! I am to go to the Eye

Dr right before my surgery -- maybe I should wait.

One of the things I always worried about was going blind from the

diabetes. Pearl, thank you for your post, you have given me such hope!

I am going to need bifocals..But she wants me to spend the money on

the progressive lenses...

Hi

In regards to progressive lens, make sure there is some kind of

guarantee that if they do not work out for you, you can get regular

bifocals at no extra charge. I tried the progressive lens and was

soooo seasick. They didn't work out--I was able to get regular

bifocals at no extra charge.

Thanks Laurie,

My eye doc told me if I got the regular bifocals. She was afraid I wouldn't

wear them !! She did warn me that with the progressive lenses. They would take

time for me to get used to.When I take in my prescription to the Optician I will

see what he thinks? Might not be a good idea.Because he will want me to spend

the most money..I'm sure..I will ask if he has some kind of guarantee..If they

don't work for me..Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Thanks,

Hi ,

Of course you'll wear bifocals if necessary. It will be less

embarrassing then when you go to the store and try to read labels and

have to ask a stranger to hold the can at a certain angle as your arm

is too short.

I was the same way as you -- now I even have a pair of " special "

glasses just for the computer. Its a different prescription--otherwise

I would have to sit across the room to use the computer.

Pearl,

That is wonderful news about your eyes! And yes, I would not be buying

new clothes if I were you, right now.

Wore the new jeans out and they were fine even though I ate dinner at

Luigi's. Jo, eat your heart out! lol

I got progressive lenses and loved them immediaately. Seemed like

true vision to me. Nowadays, I just don't wear anything unless I am

driving. I have blurred vision all the time, but who cares?

Just another one of the benefits obviously of the surgery that all haven't

had or realized they had. Just the fact that I am no longer considered

diabetic, and I have no signs of ever having been a diabetic in my eyes in a

wonder

in itself for me. So do like I do and just be thankful. I am.

Pearl.. You are not weird

On a different note on this same topic, here I sit at just over a year

out. I had my eyes checked for the first time since surgery and my

prescription has changed - FOR THE BETTER. My eyes have improved by .5

diopters in each eye and my prescription is the same as it was when I

was 25. Has anyone heard of this happening before? I mean, my

prescription has been the same for five years and now a year after

surgery it changes drastically and for the better. I'm not going to

look a gift horse in the mouth, obviously, but I'm a little bit wierded

out by it all.

Could this be caused by a reduction in fat? An increase in protein

consumption? Further proof that I am a freak of nature? I'm baffled!

That was one of the main reasons I had the surgery, as I was afraid of

losing my sight. I had such severe neuropathy in my hands and feet that

I felt it would go for my eyes next.

I haven't heard of anyone else who has had improved vision, unless they

were a diabetic. Since this surgery essentially cures diabetes, it

makes sense that the lenses of the eyes would stabilize and vision

would improve.

I seem to recall that my eyes improved once, way back in my twenties.

However, lately, after the DS, but unrelated to it, my vision has been

in a steady decline. So sad. I only have " middle vision " now...
