Wow. I never hear any mention Moline, Ilinois. Are you from that area?

Re: new member

Welcome, Lana, is your 14 year old verbal or nonverbal? What kind of behavior problem has he been having? When did it start? Is he on any meds? What have you tried that hasn't helped? Where is the behavior happening and how often? I have taken care of my 14 year old autistic grandson for 12 years, and he has had bouts of behavior problems--pulling hair, pinching, biting etc. Many times it was because he was hurting; sometimes it was a means of comunicating that he had sensory overload or he didn't want to do something. You have probably been through all of this. The things that worked for me were a blanket, music, water, or a comfort food. I kept these things in my car, and I always kept Starburst in my pocket. I kept his CD player in my purse to pull out when needed. I also kept a half of Clonidine crushed in my purse to put in his water at a moments notice. I found that the crushed Clonidine would calm him within 20 minutes when the other things didn't work. It has been almost a year since his last meltdown, and I'm not sure why. One reason may be that he feels better since he stopped all meds. Another thing may be that he is happier. I have been taking him to gymnastics twice a week, to the rec twice a week, and equest twice a week. I also hired a 22 year old recent college grad to come on the weekend and be a companion. They ride bikes, shoot baskets, play pin ball etc. go out to eat or to the mall. Sorry this is so long, and it probably doesn't apply to your situation at all because all of these kids are so different, but I'm sure you will find what works for you. blessings, Pat K************ ********* ********* ********AOL now offers free email to everyone. The time is not the issue of going to bed. It is the fact that he is screaming his head off and we live in an apt. He usually is up at 7. We have techs at night but the issue remains that when everyone else is gone, he starts yelling and screaming, will not listen, etc. Letting off a little steam is fine but last night he was up all night being loud and screaming constantly.

Do not have the money for ABA. I think he did better on Risperidol and I am hoping to get him into the hospital tonight because he is definitely out of control.

Re: new member

Isn't 10:00 a pretty normal time for a teenager to go to sleep? What time does he wake up in the morning? Karac was on Zyprexia for a while, but he gained 30 lbs in a matter of weeks and seemed to have lost all of his personality. I do think it stopped all aggression, and as I recall, your son is very slender. Do you have any help with your sons? Have you done ABA? I think you said your son is good everywhere but home. Well, we all need to be able to let off steam somewhere. Maybe home is the only safe place to do that. Pat K************ ********* ********* ********AOL now offers free email to everyone. Wow, Lana, that's rough; we had about a week of that when Karac was about nine, and we put him in the hospital for about a week or so. He was put on Resperidol at the hospital. It calmed him down, but he put on so much weight that he was taken off and put on Geodon, over my protest. The Geodon was too high a dosage and he developed Tardis dyskenia. That was a year of withdrawal hell. Both of my arms are so scarred that I have to wear long sleaves. When he was 12 he was put on .1 Clonidine and .25 Zanax at night to sleep. That worked great for about a year, but it caused Karac problems with constipation and difficulty urinating; so he began to spit it out and refused to take any meds. That was about a year ago and he has been off of all meds since and is doing great. No screaming, no pinching, no biting, and he sleeps like a baby. I tell you all this just to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there.

Yesterday I was so proud of Karac; he won the gold medal for parallel bars at gymnastic special olympics, and about five other medals for second and third place. The thing that thrilled me the most was that he was so pleased every time they called his name and he walked to the steps and took his place without any assistance. It was a four hour ordeal and Karac was able to tolerate all the waiting time between events without a meltdown. It made me cry. What have you tried aside from medication? The IJBCT has a good

article:

Behavioral Approaches to the Treatment of Sleep Problems in Children

with Developmental Disorders: What is the State of the Art

(I believe it starts on page 9 of the Pdf file)

Lana,

If you don't mind me asking what state do you live in? BC here in AR there is a free ABA program called Cir/Cuit that does ABA therapy. Have you tried HIPPO therapy (horseback riding therapy)? Many insurances including medicaid pays for it you just have to ask. I think we forget that medicaid can do a lot we just have to push them too! I'm sorry that you are having so many problems. My son will be 4 in may so I don't know you're pain and hopefully won't. I do know that he's up all night and again the risperdal combined with the melatonin has worked wonders. Also, tenex is another good medicine that's been around for decades.

No, I live in a suburb of Chicago but I drove the 2 1/2 hours west. It was totally worth it! Kirby was there, Cave MD and Neubrander, MD, etc. sara wrote: Wow. I never hear any mention Moline, Ilinois. Are you from that area? Sara -----

Thank you for your input. I live in MD and I am not sure if he can get ABA if he is 14 years old. I should try the Melatonin if I get a chance to go out and get it. Thanks to everyone.

Not much since all his bad behavior is at home. I think we have tried putting him in time out and taking away things he does not like. He is now 14, 135 pounds, much taller and heavier than myself.

Here in AR they are eligible until age of 24 years old and sometimes after that if you can get a lawyer so it's at least somethign worth looking into. I know we all have so much on our plates I just wish you the best of luck. The melatonin is at the pharmacy aisle at wal-mart just go to the herbal sections while you get groceries. alena Re: new member> > > > Isn't 10:00 a pretty normal time for a teenager to go to > sleep? > > What time does he wake up in the morning? My son takes the digestive enzymes and the methylcobalamine shots the Neubrander helped develop with Dr. Jill . However, we did the digestive enzymes before the autism diagnosis bc my husband is a pro-body builder with the NPC so we both use them to increase our dietary intake and tolerance of food most people hate! I haven't had pizza in 3 years now!

After 12 long hours in the ER, he is in the hospital and has slept all night. Thank goodness. He had not slept in days. I just want him better and stabilized on his medications.

What is it like in Dallas?

It is like Spring in Dallas; the weather today was 79. The Ornamental Pear trees are in full bloom every where; they are so beutiful. I was the most proud Grandmother there. I'm sure I was obnoxious, but I wanted him to know how proud of him I was and so was his Aunt Kim.

I have been taking Karac to gymnastics for several years. When I first took him he was uncontrolable and the manager of the gym wasn't sure that he would allow him to have lessons there, but I hired an LPT young woman to work with him who was excellent and liked the challenge. Recently the manager wrote a paper for a psy. class about Karac and the benefit of gymnastics for autism. Today Karac loves gymnastics; he is totally compliant, and has gotten really good at observational learning.

Thanks for asking; it makes me feel good to brag on Karac. Pat K************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.

I am not sure how they got him to sleep but he did not sleep until 11:30 last night even in the hospital and that is not good. He was up probably at 7. That sounds like good sleep but after sleeping nothing for a few days, it is not. He does get medicine at night but it does not put him to sleep much anymore.

Spring, wow!! It is raining hard here. It has been pretty mild but you never know about March. It can go out like a lion as they say!!!

Started him on Clonidine and now the insurance will not pay past today. I have to bring him home today and he is not even stable.

Re: new member

How long will he be in the hospital? What kind of sleeping medicine are they giving him? Pat K************ ********* ********* ********AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol. com.

We have had good results with Clonidine. I still will give Karac a Clonidine sometimes before a situation that I think will be stressful for him. How much did they prescribe? Thankfully they didn't put him on an antipsychotic. Pat K************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.

Lana,

Your doctor should contact the insurance agency and inform them that he is not stable. They may be able to do a prior authorization or override until he is stabilized.

Good luck!

April, Karac couldn't have made it in a group. He has to have a one on one, and that one on one person has to be good with special needs kids. Karac loves gymnastics and his teacher.
