Guest guest
The hulls are just more fiber. I eat them. I don't think that they taste bad at all. Lee > I have a good question. What does one do with the HULLS!!! if you use the in two or three days. When I observe bean sprouts after 2 days the hulls are still attached to the sprout. And I can't stand eating the hulls, they stick to my teeth. So am I missing something? Have you guys found a way to de-hull a two day old mung bean sprout? Or do you eat them with the hulls still attached?

Guest guest
I also dislike the hulls on mung bean sprouts. That is one reason that I almost gave up growing mung sprouts. I had been removing the hulls one at a time. Like I have time for that. I started growing the sprouts a few days longer. I use 2/3 cup of seeds in a half gallon mason jar. When the sprouts completely fill the jar, at about 5 or 6 days, I shake out the sprouts and rinse in a large bowl. By that stage the plants have pushed off most of those annoying hulls. Guest guest
If you weight them during the growing process, that will also make the hulls pop off easier. If they are quite packed into your half gallon jar that would add extra pressure. I use an EasySprout and put a small (8-10 oz.) jar of water directly on top of the mungs. Guest guest
Oh definitely, when I let the sprouts grow, the hulls come right off. But, as I said, I don't mind the hulls when the sprouts are small. When they get big and leafy, I really do not like them, and dehulling is essential. n Rollings, PhDNJ Licensed Psychologist #4686www.DrnRollings.com Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... Guest guest
Hi everybody: It's amazing how different the taste of bean sprouts are when you make them a completely different way. The other day my friend said " give me a bag of your bean sprouts " . I said " sure " . I gave her a bag and she asked me how I made them. I said " well, I do two different ways " . One way is a bean sprout, onion, garlic stir fry. " She said 'that's for me'. I saw her the next day and she said: 'Oh my god, you like these that way??? Yuck " . I burst out laughing. I then said " okay, let me make a batch of my bird's nest patties and I bet you won't say yuck " . so the next time I make them, I'll go around the corner and make her taste them. Absolutely crispy, crunchy and delicious. Same ingredient, two VERY different tastes. And both WITH NO HULLS!!!! lol mel > > > > > > > > > hi, i have been sprouting mung beans in my easy sprout. i refrig. after the white things reach less than a 1/2 inch. should i be letting these go longer? all i do is add them to my smoothies. any other suggestions are welcomed? thanks, bonnie > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
I will try the bird's nest patties. How long does it take to fry them so that they are browned and crispy? On weekdays, I usually do not have a lot of extra time, so I just give my mung beans a quick 60 boil in vegetarian broth. The light cooking in the slightly salty broth removes the bitter taste, but they still have lots of crunch. I especially like the flavor of " Better Than Bouillon " brand No Chicken flavor. I use the same broth for two days, I use the liquid a third day for a stronger flavored sprout, such as lentils. The broth is then saved for one final use as the base for vegetable soup. The link below shows the broth that I use. You may need to do a copy and paste to load the page. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome My name is Melody and I'm the one who brought Birds Nest Patties (I named them) because when they are done, they look like bird's nests. lol Anyway, I made a little video and it's on youtube. I first start with the yogurt dressing, (that's the first minute or so of the video). Of course you don't have to put anything on these things but it's a good topping. Actually my husband likes barbecue sauce on these beauties. So may I present: " Melody's Birds Nest Patties " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UftiRqLCvw8 Enjoy, Melody > > > > > > > > > > > > > hi, i have been sprouting mung beans in my easy sprout. i refrig. after > >the white things reach less than a 1/2 inch. should i be letting these go > >longer? all i do is add them to my smoothies. any other suggestions are > >welcomed? thanks, bonnie > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Ah, how long do you cook them? I learned by DOING IT. I watched until they got brown on one side, I touched them and said " okay, one side is done " . Then I flipped them. The key is when you first put them in the oil it has to be HOT oil. And from what I'm reading, people are using organic coconut oil, so if one fries these in organic coconut oil, I would imagine the taste would be out of this world. Kind of like making Coconut Shrimp (without adding any coconut, but frying in coconut oil. And the best thing about these patties is that when I use Panko breadcrumbs, and after I drain them COMPLETELY so no oil is left in the patty, well, let's say I cook these at 3 p.m. and we're not read to eat them until 6pm. or so. Well, because they have drained completely, I just take the frying pan (that has now been wiped clean and is dry, I spray some pam, and I just add the patties to the pan, they heat up, THEY ARE STILL CRUNCHY!!! and man oh man, are they delicious. My husband used to like the yogurt dressing but once he tried them with just a dash of my honey barbecue sauce, he sat up at the table and announced: " This is for ME " . And he dug in. And you can add the other sprouts into these too. I tried this. Really good. Guest guest
Now that explains why a Google search for " bird's nest sprout patties " just gave me instructions on sprouting bird seeds for birds. I foolishly assumed that bird's nest patties were a well know thing. I watched your YouTube video. Nice! I WILL make time to cook a batch tonight for dinner. Thanks, for sharing. Guest guest
I've enjoyed your video on the Bird's Nest Patties. Do you only use mung beans or have you used other sprouts? thanks! Guest guest
Hi Joan: I have thrown in the broccoli sprouts, the radish, and others. Just a handful. All it does is add bulk, it doesn't change the texture, crispiness or anything like that. The kick is the topping. When you add some yogurt dill dressing, well, it's like a little bit of heaven. Last night I harvested a whole bunch of bean sprouts I mean A WHOLE BUNCH. It was late, I didn't want to make patties because I would never eat day old patties. So I just got out my frying pan, tossed them all in, added some low sodium teriyaki sauce, and stir fried a bit. Waited until they were cool, and then I put them in a container inside my fridge. Tonight I had some fish, so I just added them to the pan and heated them. Delicious, not fattening and I GREW THEM. I can't get anyone else to understand this concept. My friends all get take out or buy stuff already made. No one cooks anymore. Except me!!! lol Melody > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > hi, i have been sprouting mung beans in my easy sprout. i refrig. after the white things reach less than a 1/2 inch. should i be letting these go longer? all i do is add them to my smoothies. any other suggestions are welcomed? thanks, bonnie > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Melody,I know what you mean when you say that folks don't cook anymore. I LOVE being in the kitchen and preparing food. I love growing it myself too-right in my kitchen and now the dining room too where the aerogarden is going nuts with the herbs. My husband asked me if I wanted to go out to dinner Saturday and I think he thought it was what I wanted to do--which I really didn't. I wanted to stay home and cook. I asked him what his preference was and he said he would much rather eat our food. So we stayed home, cooked, and had a nice, healthy dinner at home. We had planned to go to the Good Karma Cafe in Red Bank which actually has a nice raw and vegan menu. But it is a bit of a drive and we had all this good stuff to have at home. In the Summer, when we can prowl around the riverfront and watch the sun go down, I am more apt to eat out-but really, nothing beats being home eating your own food.Call me boring, but that's me. marionsitting with a pile of cookbooks that came in todays mail and the Soyabella (to make raw nut milks) n Rollings, PhDNJ Licensed Psychologist #4686www.DrnRollings.com Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... Guest guest
Thanks for the info, I'll try it with my latest crop of mixed sprouts. I cook all the time; you're not the only one. I made the curried lentil salad recipe from sproutpeople tonight. It was wonderful! My wife loved it and wanted more. Unfortunately I used the entire lentil crop for my first recipe. It was my first time sprouting and I wanted to start small. Off to start some more lentils... Guest guest
Joan,I think there are a lot of folks on this list who cook or prepare their own food--it is one of hte reasons I enjoy it so much--many like-minded people Have you tried fenugreek sprouts? Not everyone likes them, but for me them became an acquired taste that is one of my favorite now. We go through them very quickly.I have the same " trouble " with lentil sprouts---it is hard to keep enough in the house. For variety, you might want to try some of the other lentil types. French lentils are smaller, I think blue in color, and really quite good too. That curried lentil dish you made sounds fantastic! n
