Guest guest
Hi Billie,I have never made my own vinegar, but apparently my husband accidentally did with a bottle of wine. He makes wine and somehow one bottle turned to vinegar. I haven't used it as I have to research how safe it is. I often take a bunch of green sprouts and douse them with some apple cider vinegar. Yum! I buy Bragg's Apple Cider vinegar and try to have some everyday. I really like all sorts of vinegars and have been taking fortified shots of vinegar for many years (fortified with black pepper, chilies, herbs). If you go to the www.wildfermentation website and then to their forum, search for apple cider vinegar and there are a few posts. Also you can join and post your questions.I think in the book, Wild Fermentation, by Sandor Katz, he does discuss apple cider vinegar. Excellent book, I highly recommend it.this is a decent discussion with recipe:http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/how_to_make_apple_cider_vinegar.htmlL\ et us know how it goes if you make it.n
Guest guest
Practically all vinegar is made from wine: fruit-flies are the easiest source of the necessary bacterium. Are those of you who are vegetarian or vegan aware that wine is often clarified with animal products? ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sat, 8 January, 2011 14:50:52 Subject: Re: apple cider vinegar  Hi Billie,I have never made my own vinegar, but apparently my husband accidentally did with a bottle of wine. Guest guest
Yes Wine and beer are often not vegan or vegetarian. Sugar too. I don't drink at all so it isn't an issue for me. And while i try not to go nuts, I do use a vegan sugar from Whole Foods. Conventional sugar is often filtered through bone char. (sorry, went off on a tangent).I do have about 6 kinds of vinegar in the house at the moment--rice, malt, balsamic, apple cider, red wine, and homemade. Ran out of white vinegar (I use it for cleaning) and white wine vinegar (not essential). I just had a tea cup full of mixed sprouts doused liberally with apple cider vinegar. I was taking sips of Japanese rice vinegar earlier-doing a taste test of two brands. Trouble is I forget which one I liked better so back to tasting. n
