Guest guest
Hi I am an ex runner but still use running as cross-training at times. My forte is race walking. i began race walking as a trial an found that i could do it fairly well. When i use running as training i get back problems but find that when my training is based purely on walks, i don't have the same aggravation. My thoughts are; there is less G force generated with walking, hence less jarring and there is also more rotational movement of the lower back. This may allow better flexibility and strength in the region. The illiopsoas group (hip flexors, connecting spine to front of pelvis) are used more extensively also. This may also help with stability in the region. BTW, what got me interested in the subject was the fact that since my late 30's (I am now 51) I was no longer capable of running without lower back pain. I switched shoes, got orthodics, tried running on various surfaces, tried a treadmill, strengthened my lower back - the end result was always the same. I took up swimming and I still swim regularly but recently I have added fast walking. Interestingly I have no problem walking fast, walking uphill or walking with a backpack. Has anybody had similar experiences? I would assume that the reason is that running involves a vertical movement and walking a horizontal movement. I haven't seen it myself, it just came up on a list of new articles that I receive.
