Casler writes: Hi Pete, While I am not opposed to occasional ball use, I generally don't find it the superior to a more stable platform (bench) for developing " gross " strength. And, I feel its stability/instability function not as translatable as other methods. For a more " chain specific " exercise I would suggest a " hanging heavy dumbbell " press. You won't find this in most gyms since it is entirely my creation relating to 3-D force training. 3-D force training is designed to provide the ability to apply load/force in " spatial planes " other than simply vertical. To perform this exercise you need a heavy chain attached securely to a ceiling beam or structural support able to safely hold the weight of the dumbbell. Fix the dumbbells height so that as the trainee is standing in his/her stance that the dumbbell is at the proper position. Then the action is a full chain thrust with the dumbbell forward as close as possible to the actual punching action. Various loads can be used for specific purposes and segments of the action. As part of my 3-D training system, it is best to also take a " bungee " cord(s) and attach it to the dumbbell. The other end is then secured to the wall in such a way (behind the trainee) as to " counter act " the momentum of the dumbbell as it approaches full extension. The load of the cord(s) will also provide a smooth additional load curve to add training stimulus to the final portion of the action which generally is " unloaded " because of momentum. The higher (longer) the chain is mounted, the better since the movement will be in a slight arc and a longer chain will reduce this. This action is also " unstable " enough to create a full chain, full stability training function. It may take some time to find the right combination of load, position and bungee tension, but once it is established, the translation of conditioning to activity is great. This is due to the fact that it is a full Closed Kinetic Chain action involving most all the same movers and stabilizers of the activity. This combined with " gross strength " exercises, and the activity itself will provide a great conditioning model. Hope my explanation was adequate. (Caution: please make sure that all supports and fastenings are totally secure and safe!!!! A free standing, unloaded, power rack will not offer a secure enough platform to suspend dumbbells from) Regards, Casler TRI-VECTOR 3-D Force Systems Century City, CA
