Guest guest
Hi Ben, Just a comment on your post as I am interested also in a response from someone more versed in the topic. I am a long time powerlifter and I also run about 20-25 miles a week. I have noted that running seems to tighten my hamstrings and calves much more than lifting. On the other hand I have lost flexibility in my back and shoulders from powerlifting. Yoga and to some extent pilates have restored some of this flexibility although I have only been taking the classes for a few short months. The fact that last year I tore both hamstrings and my right quad (separately, not all at one time) and this year I have had no injuries and improved my leg strength and running speed without doing anything different except for yoga and pilates would lend some credence to the effectiveness of the two disciplines. I do much better at pilates as my core muscles are very strong while I struggle greatly with most of yoga. I do recommend both to all athletes for the benefits in flexibility, core strength and recovery benefits. Eddie White Blue Springs, MO. Guest guest
Hi Eddie, I am also a runner and a practicing yogin. At any rate I thought it important to note that yoga and pilates are very different. Pilates is exercise period. Pilates exercises stretch and strengthen muscle groups through isolation and it is very unique. Yoga on the other hand is first and formost a spiritual disipline, the goal is really about the spirit through the body and the mind. First you must quite the body and thus release stress and allow your energy to flow so you mind can then relase and you can find a meditative space. Through the calming of the body you tend to feel better. I would encourage you to contine with the yoga they stretching can offer you a wonderful release. Guest guest
Thank you for your insight on Ashtanga Yoga. Because of the nature of Yoga to increase flexibility and limberness of muscles, in your professional opinion, do you think Yoga would be counter-productive to sprint strength training?
