My mum was also " let go " from a job, " without reason " after 20 years of great

performance appraisals. During arbitration for an unfair severance settlement,

the HR director for the company said to my mum.... " you know why you were let

go " . She never revealed to us what that meant. This was over 10 years ago and

if I look back now, her symptoms probably went back that far. She was

officially diagnosed in 2002 after a year of psychiatrists, neurologists,

doctors and hospital psych ward visits. She also showed signs of unsocial

behaviour. Her social graces disappeared, her appearance declined with respect

to makeup, hair and clothing. She started burping out loud and saying negative

things about store employees and others out loud. This was all pre-diagnosis.

None of us were bright enough to figure out something was going really wrong

until the hallucinations showed up. I thought she was having a nervous

breakdown.....don't I wish now that's what it was. She currently resides

at the Provincial Mental Health Centre because she is just too much work for a

nursing home. She was at one last year, then she lived with me and then she

went into another home and finally she is now at the hospital. Too many changes

for one little lady.

Hi Lynn, yup, that was mum. Come to think of it, the withdraw

from " life as she knew it " came after dad died (2000)but we figured

it was part of her mourning process. Then she had a serious car

accident 2 mths after the funeral. In the hospital she talked about

how every night she watched the people in the picture on the wall

move around. We thought it was the drugs she was on.

We never connected the hallucinations and the withdrawl from

activites at all. And it wasn't until I came to this group that

things started to fall into place. And now another light bulb has

gone on for me.

Thanks for the input,

.

Annette,

I'm not anything close to a regular in this discussion group. I

posted a message, looking for information and have been checking the

last week or so for replies.

I did take the time to read this email and further bits of

your " conversation " although I think I've not read all replies.

Anyway, my dad died in 1999. My mom coped fairly well for about the

first 1 1/2 years. Then depression set in. Like you, we thought it

was a delayed grieving response so didn't think too much about it.

That went untreated for a while, but she finally admitted she needed

some help. Then anxiety became a major issue and we began treatment

through a psychologist for the anxiety. Finally, the hallucinations

began and we knew we were dealing with something more serious. In

the midst of the depression/anxiety, we watched Mom withdraw into a

smaller and smaller world. About the time the hallucinations began,

I was beginning to be very concerned that if she kept going, she

would become housebound. In March of this year, a neurologist

finally told us what she thought we were dealing with. Once I read

the family's journal at the LBD web site and began to read about the

disease, it was like having a giant jigsaw puzzle come together

before my very eyes. So many similarities to what was taking place

with my mom.

Sadly, her disease progressed so quickly that she soon

became " housebound " not out of choice but because her physical

condition became so poor.

It's so sad and difficult to watch this disease rob a loved one of

their wit, the ability to communicate, their external beauty, etc.

etc.
