Guest guest
From my own experience you need both. POA gives you the ability to make decisions about their financial needs and I had my name put on checks with my parents. Conservator gives you total control over ALL DECISIONS regarding the person that means YOU CAN SHOW THIS PAPER TO A DOCTOR, HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME and they MUST do what you want -- especially with medicines and trips to hospitals. HEALTH AGENT is another legal position you can request and that will give you END OF LIFE decision power so doctors CANNOT keep them alive if you do not wish it on machines. So look up a good ELDER CARE ATTORNEY in your state and discuss this. JUST REMEMBER as POA the NURSING HOME can come after you for his care if they feel you were " gifted " and that means transfered funds in the last 3-5 years. In addtion to the time where they can " lookback " in CT (not sure about other states) they also look at the amount gifted/transferred and divide that amount by $7600 ( this is what the state says a month in a nursing home costs -- however I have yet to find one under $9000) and that determines how many YEARS the state can request you pay for INSANE as it sounds
