Guest guest Posted March 1, 2009 Report Share Posted March 1, 2009 hello all. my name is melody and my daughter, megan is 12 and recently diagnosed with asperger syndrome, although i have known for years. she is in main stream school and does well academically so far. she is articulate but her speech is slow. she has capd (audio processing disorder) which makes it difficult for her to keep up when kids are socializing. she doesn't have any close friends at school but would like to. her interests are birds and would like to be an avian vet. she takes akido (martial arts) and piano lessons. she attends weekly therapy and a group class on saturday. now that she knows about aspergers, i am hoping to find a girls social group in town, but having little luck. we live in central california. i am thrilled to find this group which focuses on girls and hope to learn and share here. warmest regards, melody Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There are other parents here who have children in your daughter's age range. My daughter Peri is 6 yrs. old. She is dx'd high functioning autistic. She has just recently began greeting children FIRST, before they say anything to her. This is a huge step for her. Again, welcome aboard. I just had to find a home for my little green cheeked conure and I am grieving over it. I have always loved birds. My daughters care needs have increased and I was noticing that I was not able to give the bird the handling she once had. But I miss her. She yelled " Mommy " and was more verbal than my daughter. Anyway you can let her fly here with of your joys and concerns. For me, this is a really fine group. Curious, did you look us up partly because of puberty issues?. My daughter is 11. She has downsyndrome as well. Guest guest Posted March 2, 2009 Report Share Posted March 2, 2009 thank you for the welcome jay. yes, megan has a cockateil--a very squak-eee one too! the vet says we let him push us around, which is proably true. we also have 2 cats and a dog. megan enjoys the wild birds and has read all she can get her hands on about them, and reads thick bird reference books for pleasure (very aspie). but just this year, her focus has shifted to " socializing " . this has dramatically changed her willingness to shower, brush her teeth and wear fitted clothes. up until this change, soft " baggy " cotton knit was all she would wear. she is still crazy sensitve about her footwear and wears crocs to school. i am grateful for crocs. i found this group because it was mentioned in a book i was reading about girls with autism. i have joined other aspie yahoo groups but am thrilled to find one which is all about girls. the whole puberty process has been surprising and difficult. i have an older nt daughter (19) so i have experience with this time in a girls life, but this is so much different. megan has gone from sweet, honest, quiet, obedient to the opposite of all these things, except she is still honest. logic or reasoning does not get thru to her. i am struggling for ways to communitcate with her. there isn't always conflict, it tends to come in waves throughout the week or the day. another trick to me is helping the right amount. independence versus helping. for instance she cannot shampoo her hair properly, and her hair looks oily by the end of the day. we have tried different shampoos and i have showed her how to do this, but she doesn't get it. i " treat " her to me shampooing her hair and then her hair stays clean longer, but i felt this may be too much pampering. but i have read recently that this could be an OT issue. another simple thing i have started using with her is a to do list. i keep it taped to her bathroom mirror and lists all things she needs to do in the am and she follows it diligently and rather likes it. she wasn't brushing her teeth long enough, so i adjusted the list to read brush teeth for 2 minutes and now she does--no arguement. i couldn't believe how effective this list was. i used lists when my kids were little, but i just figured they were not necessary after a certain age. i am considering expanding the list option for other routine items but working out the details. i think i will add " give your mom a hug " to one of them. the road to diagnosis has been long. i knew as all of you here, that something wasn't quite right. and i don't know why, but autism kept running thru my mind but she was verbal as a toddler, and then i thought autism meant non-verbal. she performed well in school and had friends until about 2nd to 3rd grade. this is where it was clear to me that there was social delays. for instance, no eye contact and wouldn't respond to a " hello " --she would just keep looking down or around. kids were just moving and talking faster than she could keep up. the teachers said " no she is fine " and in summer before 4th grade she was diagnosed with CAPD--audio processing disorder and began speech therapy at school. by this year, i had read enough to have a pretty good idea that megan has aspergers (and so does my husband). we saw a psych who diagnosed her with OCD because she was afraid of germs and washed her hands before she ate. i felt he rushed to this diagnosis having only seen her for 1 hour, one time, so i looked elsewhere. after 9 months of therapy with another psych, we received the current diagnosis of asperger syndrome and not ocd. i can get into details about each item in the process if anyone is interested but this email is already very long, so i just hit the main points briefly. again, happy to be here. regards, melody > > Welcome Melody and !
