Mike I've had that done a couple of times now. No biggie. Even if you are claustrophobic. The booth is clear. However, it will wear you out. The tech makes you do each excercise 3 times then gives you albuterol and you do it all over again. Lots of fun.

My pulmo is going to do a Spirometry with DLCO next month and I did not know what it is, so I looked it up. One thing I found was this interesting 4 page pdf explaining spirometry in general. I've attached it and put the link in just incase the attachment gets cut out.

Hi .  I am glad she is home.  Prayers are still coming her way and yours and the family.  Love and Hugs to you.   Cheryl Burton                     ncicheryl@...                 To: asthma Sent: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 4:32:56 PMSubject: (unknown)

Well we are home now thank you for all the prayers.  They sent her home with oxygen and a oxymeter so I can keep an eye on her.  Currently she is on one liter and staying around 93-94 they said if she ends up going to 2-3 liters then bring her back in.  Im glad to be home its so much better on the whole family.  She does do worse at night she ended up being on 3 liters all night last night but she also stayed at 97-98.  I hope she gets better soon having a 4 year old confined to one room is not the best fun.

thanks again <

Hi Debbie,

Thank you very much for the link to the Consumer Reports article. I

asked the pharmacist if they (prilosec/nexium) were the same drug. She

said they were from the same family, but a little different. It looks

like they are very similar, though. Upping the Prilosec as your doctor

suggested (if needed) sounds like a cheaper alternative to Nexium.

(Also -combining Zantac is interesting and I will ask my GI doc about

this.)

What's interesting also in the Consumer Reports article is that they

talk about PPI's causing something called C-difficile (see wiki below).

My doctor is actually testing me for this for reasons you wouldn't want

me to go into.

Thank you, Debbie. I'm glad you and your kids are doing well with

your treatment program.

From Wiki

Increasing rates of community-acquired C.

difficile-associated infection/disease have also been linked to the

use of medication to suppress gastric

acid production: H2-receptor

antagonists increased the risk twofold, and proton pump inhibitors threefold,

mainly in the elderly. It is presumed that increased gastric pH,

(alkalinity), leads to decreased destruction of spores.[9]

The emergence of a new, highly toxic strain of

C. difficile, resistant to fluoroquinolone

antibiotics, such as Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin (levofloxacin), said to be causing

geographically dispersed outbreaks in North America was reported in

2005.[10]Centers for

Disease Control in Atlanta has also warned of the emergence of an

epidemic strain with increased virulence, antibiotic resistance, or

both.[11] The

Hi,

Yes, I've read about the PPI's depleting the body of

vitamins, especially B-12, I try to give my kids plenty of vitamin

enriched foods and we eat pretty healthy and natural, as much as we

can! They do better on a pretty bland diet, reflux trigger free.

I hope you don't mind me mentioning that my 6yr old is on

prilosec 20mg twice a day. My GI doc put me on 40mg once a day. I take

it in the mornings. She said I could up it to twice a day if need be. I

do well though on the 40 once a day. You might want to try taking the

two 20's together if it's not enough. If I know I'm going to have a

meal at a Family gathering with tomato sauce and spicy/fatty foods,

I'll take a zantac before, it helps a lot. Good luck, I hope it works

out for you, reflux is not a fun condition, but what is?!

Here's the site on the PPI comparison from Consumer

Reports.

Believe me, you don't want "C-diff". It took mom most of a month in and out of the hospital (mostly in) to finally kill it. Probiotics are usually part of the standard treatment, along with gobs of nasty antibiotics. May as well start on the probiotics now. They can't hurt you and may ward off the bug.

Don't know why, but the steroid nasal spray gave me terrible asthma attacks. Guess some of us just react differently. Doctor says it can't happen, but it did.

Do you know why the nasal sprays made your asthma worse?

Thanks,

Could you be allergic to one of the " inactive " ingredients? Lots of meds

contain either some kind of corn product (see cornallergens.com) or alcohol (a

problem if you're allergic to yeast).

Possibly, although most of my food allergies are relatively minor. I survive quite nicely with Xclear so they can keep the steroids.

I wish I had a dollar for everything that's happened to me that the doctors say " can't " ! :)

In a lot of cases, we know our bodies a whole lot better than the doctors do.

I don't think hair and skin colour has anything to do with it. I do have Northern European skin, but it is not completely pale, and my hair is very, very dark, as in only one shade lighter than black.

I took sulfa for 9 days of a 10 day prescription before I decided to be allergic to it! They tried to give me Tavist as a kid, and after several tries, we realized I was getting pink eye only while I was on Tavist...stopped the Tavist, didnt get pink eye for 10 yrs!

Im also not allergic to latex, but I am highly allergic to neoprene and most other synthetic rubber materials.

Oh, that had to be fun to figure out!  You start with an itch, and it gets WORSE if you scratch it???  I swear, sometimes I think these human bodies are a great cosmic joke.

I want *compatible* disabilities.  I have chronic lower back pain, it hurts if I stand or walk.  If I'm stuck in a situation where I just can't sit, I can squat down to take the pressure off. BUT -- if I squat too long, when I stand up, my blood pressure bottoms out, and I get *really* dizzy, and could pass out.  " Postural Hypotension " .  But I'm diabetic, so they want to keep my blood pressure just a little bit on the low side of normal, so I just can't squat for very long.

Of course, if I take enough narcotic pain meds to handle the back pain, I'm not diabetic... my blood sugar drops by 150 points on as little as 20 mg of morphine.  My pain doctor explains that by saying that inflammation deforms the insulin receptors in the cells, and if you fix the inflammation, the insulin resistance (and the high blood sugar) goes away.  My regular doctor says this is nonsense, since morphine isn't an anti-inflammatory.  I invite her to peruse my HbA1c scores for the last six years, and track them with my pain med history.  She says I must have been eating better, or getting more exercise, and that's why I dropped 150 points, OVERNIGHT, while on a convention where the main food supply was M & Ms, and I'd rented an electric scooter for the week.

Doctors.  <rolls eyes>

I have dermographism which means I come up in hives if my skin is scratched. Basically, I am allergic to being scratched... It is no where near as bad as it was when it started early on in 2005, but still comes and goes. It flared up badly a few months ago when it was hot and humid.

Yes. I think it is some sort of auto-immune problem.

I remember quite clearly the first night it happened - it started very suddenly, which apparently it often does. I had to take off my t-shirt and bra, and tie my hair up and sit like that, even though my room was quite cold, as I couldn't bear anything against my back, where it was worst. For about two weeks, it was really bad across my back in the evening and at night. It also, for some reason, seemed to flare up if I went into my flatmate's room... her room was in the middle of the 5 bedrooms, whereas mine was on teh end, and the end of the whole block, so a lot colder, so it might have been the warmth.

For a long time, I had to be really careful not to scratch my face when I was out, as it would flare up then, and look really bad. It also seems to be worse if my skin it wet, ie I will end up sitting there scratching my scalp when my hair is wet, so when it flares up, I have to dry my hair fairly quickly after getting out of the shower.

It has got a lot better at the moment - it can be treated with steroid cream, and I wonder if it is the same type of steroid as in my inhaler, as it got better when I started taking that. It does keep coming back from time to time, though.

I have just spent two weeks camping, so was barely indoors at all for two weeks, and I had no problems whatsoever then with it.

Boy you hit it right on the head of what most all of us have a problem with. I know I do. I have limited my gain, but it is hard. I am a little over five years out and candy and no exercise are my downers also. I just need to make myself do more protein. That will do it. I know it and maybe you can do that and bring it back down. Do the protein drinks if you have to. Just bring that protein level up and the sugar cravings slack off usually. I feel for you on your regain. Just know we are all fighting that very same battle. Just try the protein regime and I truly think you will find it will come down.

Hello: My name is and I have just joined your group. I am a veteran of the ds by Dr. K about 3+ years. I was very successful with no complications. My health radically improved and I no longer have symtoms of diabetis.

I have join the group so that I can refocused and get support. I seem to be taking my health for granted and am experiencing rapid weight gain, about 30 pounds of the 80 lost. The two biggys for me are sugar and exercise. Please help me overcome and reel myself back on track. Thank You.

I can so relate to both of you! My weaknesses are sugar and not enough movement as well! One of the old timers on OH gave me some advise about regain that so far has really helped, weigh every day and DO NOT GO OVER 5 pounds! I freak if I've gained 3 but I never got to goal, so I'd like to lose another 15. Would it help to have a weekly accountability to each other, or email our daily intake for awhile until we feel we have it under control? It's so wonderful that this group is here so we can support each other. Thanks for listening. susan
