Guest guest
Jo, What about having 2 caffine free diet sodas a day? I do that, is this something I should I should avoid? I never have on within an hour of taking my vitamins before or after. To: DS_Friends_Keshishian Sent: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 8:21 PMSubject: Re: Checking in - Hi ...redundant colon is way to common! But I haven't had the problem yet so I'll let others speak up about what it was like and how surgery may have went for them. What I do want to write about.1: I'm glad you returned to Dr. K for some advice.2: With all the antibiotics you have been on your gut flora is bound to be a mess. You need to get on a good Probiotic. Primal Defense ULTRA is the current "golden child" for probiotics as it contains lots and lots of good bacteria that you need to re-establish in you system. Be warned...it takes some time for it to be effective and you should start out slow and build up. The reason: in the beginning when you start to reintroduce the good bacteria you could possible have "die off" of the bad bacteria....which could result in loose stool, gas.... This is normal and when the die off is done you should end up with a healthier bowel. 3: Antibiotics block the absorption of many vitamins and minerals..including vitamin K, which we are already mal-absorbing. 4: Soda is a weight gaining culprit for sure!5: Don't stay gone for so long! It is a proven fact that people who stay involved in support groups tend to have the best success rates. Who knows...maybe if you were actively posting you would have put the brakes on the soda at a 15 lbs gain?? 6: None of us are perfect...none of us know everything. We are at our best when we function as a group of knowledge and support...be an active member of the team!HugsJoHugsJo>> Hi Everyone - > It's been quite a while since I've written to the group.> I guess I have felt like I haven't had much to contribute, because I have gained about 30lbs back over the last 4 years. Which I recently realized coincides with about the time I started drinking soda.> > Well, I realize I do need to participate more regularly. Over the last year or so I have had a horrible problem with MAJOR gas, infection, pain, and bathroom issues. It started following a reaction following a dental procedure last August. The doctors thought it was an infection and put me on antibiotics. OMG, what a mess!! I have been on 6-7 rounds of different antibiotics - I even had a period of time that my tongue was green.> > Everything I ate made me sick, gave me horrible gas and just made me sick. I have had to cut out so many foods. No bread of any kind, eggs, milk products, sugar, soda, etc. I must admit I crave chocolate and do have that some of the time - I have to be careful though. > > Regarding soda - I should have listened to Dr. K. - how many times I have heard him say - NO soda.> > I have been going to a gastro dr. in my area - he has been very helpful despite not dealing with that many weight loss surgery patients and I think I might be his only GR-DS patient.> > I finally decided I need to take it further - I am sooooooo tired. Tired of feeling awful and tired. SO, I went to see DR. K last week.> > He is pretty sure that I have a redundant colon. I will have a test on Monday so determine how bad it is. He said chances are 50/50 as to whether I will be able to continue to manage the symptoms through diet or if I'll have to have surgery. And, I could end up with a blockage or twisted colon at some point.> > If anyone has had this can you please share your experience?> > Thanks!> > > GR-DS March 2003 > High 350 - presurgery 320 - low 204('04)- Current 237>
Guest guest
There is not one single redeeming quality to ANY Soda regardless of flavor or calorie content. The artificial sweeteners are evil, regular sugar is healthier as it is closer to natural...however those empty calories do add up. The carbonation can cause the bowel to expand with gases and fold over on itself causing emergency surgery to take care of the obstructed bowel. Then of course there is the phosphoric acid in many sodas...which is like battery acid to your teeth and is horrible to bone health. Cola consumption has also been linked to chronic kidney disease and kidney stones. I could go on...but you get the picture...not one redeeming quality. Having said that...guess who will kill you for a Pepsi! But be aware...you may drink them...but it's like smoking...in the long run it just ain't healthy for you on any level...just know it and don't justify it...own it. Guest guest
Jo I understand about soda, and before DS, I must admit that I was quite addicted. However, no longer. Is beer in the same category? I am not a beer drinker, but I have been curious. Laurie
