I would ditch the chiropractic and other symptom-oriented

frivolities and try to find an experienced trainer or coach to look

at your squatting technique. Failing that, videotape it yourself

and compare what you see with what you know about proper squatting

technique, and if you don't know enough, learn more. My guess would

be that you are either using too much weight or inappropriately

flexing your lumbar spine, or both. If you lack the hip mobility to

do squats properly, you may need to spend some time doing unweighted

ROM exercises and stretches to gain that mobility before putting on

heavy loads.

Hi ,

What was the effect of the mobilizations & treatment? Any change

or not really? Also, does the pain occur regardless of weight? In

other words, if you only went to 45% of your 1 rep max, and went

reasonably deep, would there still be pain?

Many times I find that a technique flaw in terms of trunk or

pelvic positioning during the execution of the lift is the flaw. You

may find pain is reduced if you alter your stance, or your choice of

supplemental exercises. An example, I have had several patients who

reported back pain with squats, yet improved greatly by deleting bent

rows and stiff legged deadlifts from their programs. This is

anecdotal & must be taken for what it's worth. The best answer will

come from a detailed examination & assessment of your problem by a

sports minded practitioner.

Thank you very much for both replies. I will have a trainer check my

technique. My suppleness seems fine to do a normal Squat.

I felt this sharp pain when I did a light Snatch as I pulled it from

the ground. It was only on the first one though, there after it was

much better than normal but still painful. Any light squatting at the

moment is relativly painful after the first set or two. I do have a

fused L5-S1 vertebra from birth, it hasn't caused any problems since

I started training 8 years ago, OL FOR 2 years.

Any specific rehab exercises that might help ? Do I need to rest much

longer or should I possibly see a specialist.
