Guest guest
Hi,I was reading a digest version with all the different issues and I kept thinking to myself that you all need Dr. Weiss. I was lucky enough to have him to my home some 15 yrs ago but he also did or does television shows. There is one show in particular where he gets a child to stay in his room all night instead of sleeping with the parents and it is very impressive. I posted his website or blog below but you will have to look around to find the shows. His methods REALLY, REALLY improved my life. http://michaelweissphd.wordpress.com/One of my son with autism's issues was also running away and invading my neighbors houses or pools. wanted us to set up my son so he would run and then have someone one outside to catch him to teach him proper behavior..with no yelling just instruction and walking him back to where he should be. Again reinforcing good behavior and in an instructional tone when he was doing the wrong thing. So you need to have a couple people to help you make a "no running" program and to teach your child to listen to you when you say stop. This could take months to teach but you set up specific times to teach it. You might need to begin with a "stop and go" program where you start with a reinforcer, like a raisins or chips or whatever fits in your lifestyle, in your hand. You say "Go" and you walk a few steps and say "Stop" then reinforce, then do it again until the distance gets further and further. First walk together, then have the child walk away from you beginning with short distance and then expanding the distance. Reinforce positively each time they do as asked. Withhold if they do it wrong but walk back to the beginning and start again. Always end on a positive note and do not let negative behavior let them escape. This can be a really fun game but it teachers them what stop means. For my son he responded better to sit down and when he ran I would tell him to sit down and he followed that command best of all. You might want to learn and use the sign language sign for stop as well so they have a visual it if you need to use it across a room and you don't want to yell. (meaning to stop anything not just running)At 3 1/2 they are still really young and wild. Did you know research shows a child with ADHD is actually 3 years more immature to their peers..think about autism...geesh. We need to teach the skills they are lacking one at a time. Wishing you a fun time with stop and go.... ********* 29:11*********"The only limits one has, are the limits one sets."
