Do I dare even ask? Just got word last week that the speech therapy services we have been going to now (for almost a year) aren’t covered by insurance. I have been told that they are waiting to hear back from the insurance company and was patiently waiting. I got tired of waiting last week and called. According to the lady I spoke with in the claims department, when it comes to Autism or Aspergers (which I’m not sure they’d even consider autism) they’ll cover diagnosis and then meds for behavior issues or physical therapies to help motor skills and getting around. That’s it. As far as speech therapy (which we have been going to a social skills group for almost a year and it’s been wonderful) they don’t cover speech unless it’s caused by an accident or illness. (And Autism isn’t an illness) As I was talking to the secretary about this, the moms in the waiting room and I got into a discussion. I asked “Which insurance does offer some coverage?” The secretary said tri-care (military) and sometimes blue cross blue shield. So now what? What do you do to help with these expenses? Is there a secondary company that offers assistance for our guys who need other therapies? The insurance company said that my son should be getting his services in the public school, but since he’ll pass the standardized tests, he doesn’t qualify. I feel like I’m in a vacuum. Just wondering if there are avenues to explore out there and where I should start. I am going to file an appeal with the insurance, although I don’t know that it would do much good. Thanks!Tera
