A person asked a question about a supplement. Could you not simply answer the question if you indeed have any knowledge or understanding that might be of benefit without attacking that person for using a supplement without researching it? Citing a bunch of references may or may not answer someone's question. Many people do not have the ability to even check the references because in most instances you have to have a subscription to get the stuff IF you can comprehend it in the first place. I can definitely understand certain individuals wanting or needing research back up, but Eddie is correct: For those of us who are only training and not designing equipment or doing research, references are of no use whatsoever. I happen to use this list as a sounding board because I find I get very interesting opinions from people who think. I don't care if they conflict. My question about the Egoscue method is a good example and I will take this opportunity to thank everyone who has (or plans to) answer me. I thought the site was very hype-oriented but then sometimes these folks think that if it's not written in that manner no one will pay attention. I am just the opposite but I doubt I'm the norm or you wouldn't see this sort of carnival prose. As far as researching a supplement, I agree that when a question is asked on ST, the person should get honest answers. Again, they may conflict but that doesn't matter. I gave the answer to thermogenics that I did because I think that all too often people are looking for a quick fix to a situation that must be gone at slowly. There are several articles on Dolfzine about thermogenics with the general consensus being that the only one that really works is ephedra. But if ephedra is going to be yanked off the supplement market, then what? I would like to add one more request to people who ask about supplements. Tell us something about yourself. In the case of a thermogenic, why do you want to use it? I would give someone who has to make weight for a contest a much different answer than I would someone who just wants to lose 10 pounds so they can look good at their upcoming high school reunion. I would have even another answer for someone who was 50 pounds over fat. Guest guest
Eddie, I do not feel that this group should be here to get " simple easy to understand answers. " I am a strength and conditioning coach and I want to here what others have to say and I hope that they can back up their words with research (or some practical experience). This is an educational forum. As I tell all of my athletes, always ask why?? Too many people in this field are looking for the easy answer. This is not an attack on you in any way. Mel was great for making one think and answer their own question. Education is not being told the answer it is figuring the answer out. I become more confused everyday and that makes me work harder and learn more. I love to opportunity I have to read Dr Yessis and others that I respect on this board. I have gained more knowledge trying to figure things out and speaking to people who would not give me the easy answer. In college (Penn State) I was often told the answer and never given an opportunity to push my thinking but in the last five years I have been given that opportunity. I only wish colleges (my current employer included) educated more and stopped giving students the answers.
