I am not sure how you felt when your diabetes came back, but for some reason I

felt ashamed, like it was my fault for not eating right or something. I wanted

to ask you if you are type 1 diabetic. After my surgery, I was very close to

death because of the diabetes. My sugar levels were spiking and I got severe

ketoacidosis. I was so sick that I never even felt pain after the sugery from

the incision. Dr. K discussed with his collegues about my case and he told me

that it was possible that I had these complications from the surgery due to

being type 1 diabetic that went undiagnosed. I feel that this could be true and

maybe I had gotten diabetes as a teenager. I also think that this could be a

factor in acquiring the diabetes again.

It is a bummer that the diabetes came back and yet I choose to look at the

bright side and realize I had almost 4 years of no diabetes. I see my pcp on

thursday to get an oral medication.

When I found out that your diabetes came back, my doc was changing some

medications for me. I started testing my blood sugar and it was about 300. I

was eating cereal every day. I stopped eating the cereal and started adhering

to a diabetic diet and my blood sugars were around 150. I checked the memory in

my meter and realized that the diabetes must have just came back in the last

month or so. Yes, finding out that your diabetes came back helped me to make

sure I was testing my sugars more. I am glad to find it so soon after it came

back so that I can get on an oral medication and monitor it. I don't crave

sugar so that helps A LOT. I knew my diabetes was going to come back because I

was having more low blood sugars than before.

I also feel that if I had stayed away from sugar that my diabetes may have not

come back as soon as it did. But, that is water under the bridge. I just have

to deal with it now.

I wanted to ask you if you were going to have a revision and if so, was that

going to help with the diabetes. I see Dr. K in July and I am going to ask him

this question. If it is possible that the diabetes can go away again with a

revision, I might consider this in about 5 years.

Now, we have even more in common :) Take care.

I am SO sorry to hear the diabetes came back! Did our conversation

have something to do with you finding out? If you ever want to talk

you can call me. I know what that feels like and its pretty crappy! I

have looked into several protein drinks lately. I don't want any

artificial sweetener because of all the reports about weight gain. I

found a new one at whole foods that is rice protein (still a complete

protein according to the package). It has reasonable sugar and lots of

fiber.

Yes, you answered all my questions, lol. The chronic infection really does

raise blood sugars. Anytime I have an infection my blood sugars are higher.

Why do we feel ashamed about the diabetes coming back if it isn't our fault? I

guess because I was told by my family that I got diabetes cause I got fat. But,

that really isn't the truth if I got it as a teenager.

I think my mom got type 2 diabetes and actually died from ketoacidosis. She got

diabetes around the age of 52 or 53 and died at age 55 from the ketoacidosis.

She was using crank to lose weight and her sugars got out of control. She

didn't want to get on the insulin. Stubborn.

Dr K had said I was a very rare case when I got ketoacidosis after the surgery.

At that time, he had done about 800 surgeries and I was the only one that it

happened to. Not sure if it has happened to anyone since. I am just special,

lol.

Yes,Yes and YES! I have really struggled with the sense of shame

that I have failed. Not only did I only loose about half my excess

weight(and I was a lightweight to begin with) but my diabetes came

back. I will always wonder if I had eaten better if things would

have been different. However, most days I have the same outlook as

you, that is in the past and now I just need to deal with it. I also

thing the chronic c-diff played a big part for me. The chronic

infection has to of influenced my blood sugars.

I was tested for the antibioties for type 1 right before my DS by an

Endrocrinologist. I told him that my doctors were always arguing

with me about which type I am (because my mom was type 1 and I was

16 at onset). He said the test would tell us forsure and it said no.

Therefore, I am type 2. With that said, yours does sound like type

1! Not to mention that it is extreamly rare for a type 2 diabetic to

get ketoacidosis (so I'm told).

I see Dr K on July 3rd and I plan to talk to him about it. But I

don't know if I could go through another major surgery and risk the

c-diff coming back. My family thinks I'm nuts for even considering

it. Plus, if they shorten my common channel, I am afraid I might get

vitamin deficent, even if I take my supplements religiously (which I

do right now).

Does that answer your questions? :0)

My mom also died a few years ago. She died Oct 2003, 3 months after my surgery.

It's weird how much we have in common. What are your days off? I still have

your number at my computer desk. I was going to call yesterday but I don't know

your schedule.

I don't know why we blame ourselves...habit maybe? *lol*

Another thing we have in common...unfortunately. My mom died from

her diabetes a couple years ago when she was 52. She had a big meal

the night before and alcohol, which I am sure both contributed to

her death the next morning. She never was very compliant with her

diabetes. She only did the minimum to keep herself out of the

hospital and failed at that many times!

We really should get together sometime. We would have a lot to talk

about!
