Guest guest
, Call the office NOW!! You shouldn't be having that type of problem unless something else is going on. Talk with either Dee or michelle and let them know exactly what you put in this message. At five months, this is nothing to be toying with. Dee and Dr. K. need to be brought in to this immediately. Jerry --Original Message Text--- From: Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2008 04:35:47 -0000 I have had GERD for many years, but pre-DS had it well controlled with medication (proton pump inhibitor, Gaviscon) and a few lifestyle changes (small meals, not eating near bedtime, sleeping with head elevated, etc.). However, since my DS I have on a number of occasions experienced really severe symptoms and I'm not sure what is going on. Last night I was awakened again in the middle of the night with VERY bad reflux - had to delay going back to bed for a couple of hours and was really miserable and in pain. I assume I must have aspirated some of the reflux, as both my esophagus and lungs are very painful today and I am coughing up thick, opaque mucous, although I have not had a cold or other respiratory illness. I didn't eat or drink anything likely to irritate yesterday - had a piece of plain pot roast and some peas for dinner. I'm at a loss to explain this and am really hesitant about eating ANYthing right now! Have any of you had experience with this after the DS surgery? (I'm five months out.) I have really been expecting the reflux to improve with the weight loss, but so far it is worse instead of better. I would really appreciate hearing if any of you have dealt with this post-DS and what was successful for you. I go to see Dr. K next month and will definitely talk to him about it, but in the meantime I'm hoping for some input from you all on the message board (who, I think, know everything!!). Thanks!! Guest guest
, the same thing happens to me when I get thirsty and drink water on a full (of food) stomach, and then go lie down. I wake up coughing and choking on aspirated stomach contents. I hope you didn't get pneumonia. You do not have a fever, right? That can happen, but usually to an older person. I never got it that bad. Your stomach is smaller now, so there is less room for accomodating food and liquid. You can still have reflux. Guest guest
No, Marta, I don't have a fever. I did consider pneumonia for awhile, but the lungs are finally feeling better, the cough has improved and is not nearly as productive now. (Don't know what you mean by " older, " but at 65 I assume I could qualify! lol) Thanks for the reassurance! I was about to start worrying. You are probably exactly right about the water - I drank more than usual last night while watching TV, so I probably did it to myself! Who was probably gulping instead of sipping! > > , the same thing happens to me when I get thirsty and drink water > on a full (of food) stomach, and then go lie down. Guest guest
I am almost 5 years out and I have never gotten rid of my GERD. I deal with spasms though when it gets really bad. Or I get really bad heartburn. I have never had those symptoms that you have but everyone is different. You may need to change your RX. I had to and it made a world of difference. Guest guest
OK, I listened to what you smart and caring people told me and sent Dee a copy of my post about the bad reflux. To my surprise, she forwarded it to Dr. K and he emailed me that he wants me to have a gastrograffin swallow study done. I tried to look that up online, but the only information I came away with was that it apparently has a " foul taste. " Oh, goody! Has anyone else ever had this done - or even heard of it? If so, I'm wanting to hear anything anyone can tell me. I'm a big girl, but not a brave girl! Marta, I'll bet you know about this, yes?
