Guest guest
I am sorry Jodie, try looking at it another way, from my perspective. I just see you jerking me around very disrespectfully, trying to manipulate me and bully me to get your way with me and get me to yield to your thinking. I know you love children and you advocate for them from what you have said, all the more reason you should be tolerant and accepting I would think. Guest guest
Cant we all just agree to disagree. I've read all these posts and dont see where anyone is bullying anyone but its getting very childish. Every CHILD IS DIFFERENT EVERY PARENT IS DIFFERENT> I dont see why things should get so heated and childish. I've seen way too many of these debates on here and other lists and facebook in the last 2 days. These kids are all very special and unique....what works or doesnt work for these kids is unique but everything is worth a try. NO I DO NOT CONDONE BEATING OR SEVERE EMOTIONAL ABUSE however you have to remember these kids emotions are so different from a normal child it takes much more in many cases to be emotional abuse, Also it can take alot less for physical abuse with the sensory issues alot of these kids do have. Guest guest
But don't you see people refuse to agree to disagree, that is the problem. Seems they want you and your views to simply disappear! Also I think it is bullying any time threats and ultimatums are given about leaving a group, that is bullying. Then people jump on the bandwagon to join the bullier and you have a gang of bullies. I don't think it is particularly childish to stand up to bullies. Some very strong and mature people have been known to do this in past history, like and the Goliath, many stories like that. To me they are my inspiration. Have lived my whole life so far standing up to bullies in my life and don't plan to stop....just me. Guest guest
Hi Daisy, I agree with you. Every child is different and we all have different ways that we make it through each day. However, its very disheartening to me that we can not share our experiences or opinions without being attacked by someone who feels does things a little or a lot different than we do. There are many discussions or post I just ignore or choose not to respond because either I do not agree or feel they do not pertain to my situation, however, I still try to keep an open mind. Guest guest
I don't tell my kids I'm going to leave them. I warn them if they don't stick close that someone will take them. Some mother/ father that wasn't able to have children that always wanted a child. I'm sure this scenerio does exist, but it seems to work. They say, no Mommy, I want to live with you always. I say good, then keep close, because I don't want to lose you either. Guest guest
HI,A lot of the time they grow out of it running in stores depending on severity. My son with autism would run... then what would I do with the baby in the cart? Those were hard years. I finally had to break down and get help.I had a $150 hr behavior specialist work with me at Wal-mart to teach my son proper store behavior over many days. He was about 5 at the time. The specialist had him push the cart and with a bag of chips the specialist would reinforce good behavior, for example every few steps give him a bit of chip, and never let him make a mistake. It was many short trips increasing the demands each time until we could make it though just purchasing one item. Over time it increased until we could shop. So you need to put a "going to the store" program in place where you teach your child how to behave. Also as soon as they act up in a store the "books" say to leave the store immediately. (in real life..that is not so easy). Another idea is not shopping with them until they get a little older if possible. Yes, I am giving your permission to get a babysitter so you can shop if you can afford one. I also use to pick up a balloon or toy they wanted and if they were good they got it and if not I put it back. It was cheaper than a babysitter. Remember it is only bribing if you pay to get someone to do something they should not do. It is positive reinforcement if you pay to get them to do what they are suppose to do. Another thought, the running is often the sensory system over loaded. Try deep pressure before you begin, shop often for less items so he can be successful and reward him for all his good behavior. Most of all remind them all the time of the expected behavior over and over. Remember we walk in the parking lot. What do we do? We walk in the parking lot. Good walking, I am so proud of you. Look you are walking in the parking lot. Nice job remembering to walk to keep safe. A lot of the time they forget what they are supposed to do. Wishing you patience and rest. You are on a slow and steady marathon not a race. Pick your battles, teach how you expect them to behave. ********* 29:11*********"The only limits one has, are the limits one sets." Guest guest
Has anyone ever watched " the good wife " on abc? Its a tv show about a wife & her job as a lawyer... Anyway 1 of the judges ALWAYS makes everyone in her court say " in my opinion " at the end or begining of whatever they say!! In a court room u always have 2 sides who think they r correct & the other party is wrong.... Each party may be wrong or they may be correct... But both parties really only have their view of the situation & the knowledge they bring to the table. We all bring experiences to this group as well as knowledge & education good or bad... In my opinion (imo) every post should be a question or atempt to provide info! We all have to remember to think about how what we are typing... Is being read & recived! I am a christian and I don't spank. I do disipline my boys. disipline ether in the form of a spanking or other way does not equel physical or emotional abuse. Can both forms of disipine be missused? Yes!! Carolyn, I think you are here like all of us to learn & help others! However, I think some of the things you experienced with your son marty may not be relavent to the way ASD kiddos are treated today. I can only imagine how hard it was for you, your son & family then. But in the last 10 years I have never heard of a parent being told to put a child in a institution & throw away the key. I am so sorry you went thru that & so greatfull parents today don't face the same issue!!! But i don't think calling someone a bully is ok... IMO Jodie's first post was respectfull yet voiced her opinion... I hope we can ALL get back on topic now and help this parent with her sons running issue. thanks, thumb typed :-) I hope everyone can --- Original Message --- Sent:Tue 6/14/11 11:35 am To:autism-aspergers Subj:Re: Son runs off I am rather amazed that those who tout themselves to be so full of such amazing such love and kindness and acceptance for aaaaall people, show themselves to be the most intolerant of others! Guest guest
Thankyou , good advice here, yes I do watch " The Good Wife. " But I disagree that Jodie's post was peaceful and respectful, as well as some of the others. Many have been quite rude and disrespectful towards me. About my son and the institution, yes this was bad when they did that back a few decades ago, but I do not think this type of thinking is that far away, it still exists where many people still want to punish those with disabilities, and not ALL people in these fields are loving and compassionate but only want control over others. Evil has not gone away in fact has become worse, maybe only pulled back for a time to make us complacent and too trusting. IMO...! I will work on that! Guest guest
My son does this too. When we go places for a med/long period of time he rides in a weelchair. We used to use a stroller(perfect for little kids]. He thinks the wheelchair is fun! I know all kids may not feel that way. I know a couple people who use kid leashes. I thought the idea was strange, but my friend said "You try doing it without one!" Well, I took her daughter in a store. This kid was wild! Who am I to judge? I ask him to come back, he doesn't seem to care; I run after him, he goes farther (I think he thinks it's a game). Any suggestions on how to keep him from doing this? Thanks!
