The Kaiser Family Foundation will host a policy workshop on reaching and enrolling the 14.4 million low-income people with Medicare potentially eligible for additional assistance with premiums and cost-sharing as part of the new Medicare drug benefit. The Social Security Administration and state Medicaid programs will begin enrolling eligible applicants for the assistance in July 2005. The workshop will include updates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Social Security Administration on outreach and enrollment efforts, as well as perspectives on the challenges and strategies from those involved in outreach to low-income Medicare beneficiaries. The discussion also will address lessons learned from efforts to enroll low-income seniors for transitional assistance under the Medicare drug discount card program, which will be replaced by the new Medicare drug benefit in January 2006. The workshop will be open to policymakers and the media and will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, in the Barbara Jordan Conference Center at the Foundation’s D.C. offices. Disman, New York Regional Commissioner and Chair of the Medicare Taskforce at the Social Security Administration; Firman, President and CEO of the National Council on Aging and Chair of the Access to Benefits Coalition; Vicki Gottlich, Senior Policy Attorney at the Center for Medicare Advocacy, Inc.; and R. McMullan, Deputy Director for Beneficiary Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
