beth wonders

Hi my aunt's dr. said she had a uti last week, and gave her augmentin

for it and that seem to make her worse so he gave her cipro. Well

she has been like a wild animal, doesn't sleep hardly at all, my arm

looks like a scratching post! Does this sound like what a uti does

to someone with a lewy body? The last one she had was after a

surgery, but she was in the hospital. I read on a home remedy site

to take two alka seltzer for an outset of an UTI anyone hear of

this? Could the cipro make her worse...i'm at a loss, and I don't

know what to do? thanks for your help in advance......love & peace

Beth

hi beth,

i cannot talk about utis and lbd, but i can talk uti's all day, as i have a

ursotomy (urine bag) because my bladder had to be removed years ago,

augmentin and cipro i believe are both sulpha based medicines, many people

cannottake them as they are allergic to sulpha, the itching you describe could

be an

alergic reaction to the medicines. ihave never heard of the alka seltzer

trick, drinking plenty of water, and little or no caffeine or carbonated drinks

helps clear it up as well. again i am not a medical expert just a profession

bladder/kidney patient thought i would give you my input, i hope it helps

another drug i use when i cant take the cipro is noroxin, it is not as

strong i have to take it 10 days instead of 7 but my alergic reactions are none

so

that might be one to try, good luck to both of you, hugs sharon m

a smile a day keeps the meanies away!!!

laughter is a breath of fresh air!

We found two things ...

Not only do other drugs (antibiotics) send Dad for a loop but

it seems when ever he was sick - it effected to adsorbtion of

the regular meds he took - so that his mental state was always

off.

Hopefully as the UTI clears - so will you r Aunt !

This is a rough one, but I can tell you that my mother has taken

Cipro and relatively recently. I detected no major changes in her because

of the antibiotic. Obviously all LBD patients react differently so YMMV,

of course. Try her on a regimen of cranberry juice and see if that doesn't

help with the UTI. Also garlic and golden seal.

My mom had a bad UTI this summer - but her reaction was completely

different! She slept an entire day - not even getting up to go to the

bathroom. She had to go to the hospital. I do not know what antibiotic she

was given, however, but I could find out.

Now - in order to prevent FUTURE UTIs, my mom takes a 1000mg cranberry

capsule every day. These are more potent than drinking cranberry juice and

everyone I know who uses them swears by the capsules.

Hope this helps.

Yes - definitely part of the UTI!!!! You will need to have the doctor

prescribe an antibiotic I imagine.

Hi, Beth,

Augmentin is a combination antibiotic of amoxicillin plus clavulanic

acid which makes it a distant relative of penicillin and Cipro is one

of a newer class of antibiotics called the quinolones. The quinolones

can have central nervous system effects and I have requested that my

mother not be put on quinolones for that reason. Neither of them is

considered a sulfa drug. Sulfas (Bactrim, Septra) are an inexpensive,

often first approach to UTI's yet many people are allergic to sulfa

drugs and should not take them for that reason. A second common

approach is nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) yet this one can

cause stomach upset. If the UTI has progressed and become severe, the

prescriber may prefer to start with a " big gun " , broad spectrum

approach even before a urinalysis result is seen, which would show

what bacteria are specifically causing the UTI and which antibiotics

these bacteria are susceptible to. My mother has had several severe

UTI's in the past couple of years and her discomfort made me anxious

to have her treated immediately. Forcing fluids is important

to " dilute " the bacteria and flush it out of the body. I decided to

regularly take drinks to have in the nursing home that I know my

mother likes (her favorites are Boost Breeze berry flavor and Boost

coffee mocha flavor!)so her caregivers can offer them to her regularly

each day to help reduce the possibility of her UTI's.

Hope this helps - Take Care - Deb

Hi Beth, mum takes Cipro for her chest congestion. It makes her feel

a little naseasous but not wild.

As a kid we were always given cranberry juice for all things of a UTI

nature. May be an old wives tale, but since it is natural it may not

hurt to give it a try.

Hope this helps.
