Guest guest
Pat, we are off to Stonehenge today. We wanted to do something touristy. I will be back in a few days, then jet-lagged for a week or so. Ugh. My hair is flat as a baby's. Apparently that is in style here. No shower, only a tub. Gotta turn the hot water on to bathe. Just different, you know? Yesterday we got the trampoline assembled and partially finished the swingset. We will finish it when we get back from the south. The yard is full of weeds and Don and I are all for better living through chemicals, but apparently the other parental units are not! They believe in back-breaking labor to chop the weeds and haul them to the dump. OH, my aching back! Well, I cleverly offered to take the baby inside and feed her, then never returned... Marta freezing to death! > > Question as to when you are coming hom??? > Haven't heard from Dovie and Matt so guess > they are having fun, they are also going to > learn to scuba dive. She won't call as some > man on the plane said it cost him $600.00 > when he got his ph. bill and we don't have > a # to get in touch with them...Guess they > are having one heck of a belated Honeymoon..LOL > God bless, > Pat >
Guest guest
Marta --- SKIP Stonehenge and go to Avebury which is nearby. It's 1,000 years older, and 10 times larger and you can wander about among the stones and even touch the stones. In fact, it's so large that an entire village is built inside the double rings. At Stonehenge, you can't get with in 100 yards of the place as they have a protective fence up. you really SHOULD have consulted me before you went to England. Guest guest
Marta, I did do a lot when I was there. I saw so many castles I can't remember their names. Of course did the Tower of London thing. I loved that, but I want to go back because since then because I do genealogy I found that I have several relatives buried there. I saw them, but didn't realize they were relatives. Of course I will have to go back through my stuff and mark down who is who that I want to photograph their graves. I want to take more time also. I had my daughter to go with me last time, and now I have to wait until her son is grown to get her to go again. She wants to go, but he is just 10. So I hope I am still healthy enough, which I plan on being, when he gets old enough to be on his own so we can go. I don't have a DD to go with me. Since I go no where to find one I don't see me finding one either. In fact, come to think of it, with all the hours you work, how the heck did you find one? I knew you had one and was surprised to find that one had gone south, and that you had another one and he was willing to go with you to England, which I thought was great. To go with you, go and do for your family and all. Fantastic. Sounds like a keeper. I don't know if you brought him to the last meeting or not, but maybe you can bring him to the next. I plan on being there. My daughter goes to camp and I will have a day to myself. Barring anything I don't know now. Glad you had a great time. Glad you are coming home. Guest guest
Marta, you know I have a problem with getting out on my own because of my daughter. I go no where without her, or do anything without her. Basically my life consists of taking care of her. Going to the Dr her in town even involves taking her with me most of the time. I just don't trust her to a babysitter, nor do I know of anyone besides my brother who is an hour and twenty minutes away to leave her with. He is willing to take care of her for me, but that is hard for me to do. I have been so lucky to have him take her when I had my surgeries, and then take me. I used to dance and belong to a dance group, but then I had so many surgeries I became unable to dance and teach dance, so that is out. Not that I wouldn't love to do that again, but that is also at night, and guess who has to be home and putting her daughter to bed at eight. You know how I always have to head home from the meeting because of getting her to bed. I will be at the June meeting, and I don't have to go home early, as she will be at camp, so I can come early and stay late. Heck I can even get a room and stay if I need to. I have the week by myself. Monday to Friday that is. She is going to camp for the first time in years. I don't know if I will know what to do with myself. Heck I may even go out one of those nights and see if I can find my old dance group. It has been years though. Can't dance now because of my arm. Dang, dang, dang. Oh well... Guest guest
Boy, do I understand your feelings. We share some relatives. I also have found I am related to all kind of Kings and Queens and once you can make that connection, as you have found out, you can find out all kinds of connections. I nearly went crazy when I made the connection. Right now I can't tell you all the ones I found I was related to, but I remember when Braveheart came out I told my grandsons that they were related to both sides in it. They loved the movie the first time they saw it, but then to think they were related to the people really made them like it. Like when King Ralph came out with Goodman, there were various scenes in it that I told them that I had been there, seen that, and stuff like that. That became their favorite movie. They are 23 and 21 and still remember all the things they used to say, you were there weren't you Grandma? I had just came back from my second trip and had lots of photos and such to back it all up with. I also went to Lincoln County, TN once to try to trace my gr gr grandmother, who was a full blooded Cherokee from there. When I got there, I was like you, I was so full of emotion, just feeling that I was standing on land that she may have walked on, seen hills she may have seen or lived in, just things like that. It was very emotional for me. So I fully understand your feelings. Pearl **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch " Cooking with Tyler Florence " on AOL Food. Guest guest
Thanks, Pearl. I lost my DH a while back. Never discussed it, feelings were deep and painful. Couldn't believe my luck in meeting someone IN A CLASS. Hint hint hint. So far, only Betsy has met him. Hopefully we can go to a meeting together, but the problem is that I work in Delano and tend to hit the support group meeting on the way home from work, if possible. He would be in BFL, chances are. He is really a great guy. Hmmm...don't know of any of my relatives here. Probably are some, but my known ones are from Ireland, Finland, and Scotland. Mostly Finland, through my father. Mom's lot were travellers. Marta > > Marta, I did do a lot when I was there. I saw so many castles I can't > remember their names. Of course did the Tower of London thing. Guest guest
One of the advantages of having been a genealogist for more than 30 years is that I knew where my relatives were in the UK. I visited a lot of ancestral sites. But, I'm lucky enough to have had ancestors who had the good breeding to marry into royalty and other titled family. Several of the UK's saints are in my family and I connect to the royal houses though The s and Tudors. One of the spiritual moments for me was standing in the middle of no-where at Flodden Field. That's where almost an entire line of my family was wiped out by the English. Flodden is in the middle of bloody no place and yet 10s of thousands of soldiers all gathered there to whack the hell out of each other. As I stood at the monument and looked over the battlefield, I was so overcome with emotion that I could not speak to my companion. Three photos that I will always treasure are one of me standing in front of the statue of the Bruce (a direct ancestor) at his castle, Sterling; one of me at the grave of of Aragon (a relative by marriage to Henry VIII) in borough Cathedral; and one of the spot where the Bruce's heart is buried. It's something only true genealogists understand. To everyone else it's meaningless. The photo of me at St. Margaret of Scotland's grave (one of my relatives who was Queen of Scotland) didn't turn out. _____________________________ © 2008 The contents of this email message, including any and all attachments, are intended solely for the use of the person or entity to whom the email was addressed. Guest guest
, funny thing is, I read that Manchester is the worst place to live when you measure longitivity. lol Too much smoking and drinking and bad-for-you food, it seems. When we drove back north in England, I felt relief. The south may be prettier and nicer, but I prefer the more open, less crowded feel of the North of England, much as I prefer such places in the States.
