Guest guest
Action Network Federal Action Alerts Federal Updates Introduction Issue Briefs State Legislative Trends < ADVOCACY HOME ACT NOW TO INCREASE NIH FUNDING! You are receiving this e-mail because your Representative is on the House Appropriations Committee. Last week, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services approved a small $145 million increase, 0.05%, for funding to the National Institute of Health for the FY'06 budget. This is significantly lower than the Senate-passed budget resolution of 5.3% for FY'06, and the 6% increase that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has supported. Due to the time-sensitive nature of this vote, we are asking you to telephone your member of Congress TODAY! Message to your Representative: The Society recognizes that federal funds are limited due to the increasing cost of war, counter-terrorism measures and health care. However, the federal government plays a critical role in furthering the scientific understanding of chronic diseases, and a 6% NIH increase is needed to: * Cover the cost of inflation (3.2%), * Maintain the preeminence of the U.S. biomedical industry, * Ensure the continuation of ongoing research projects, and to * Assure NIH will instigate new biomedical research projects that will benefit MS and other chronic diseases. To contact your member of Congress call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. Background: It is estimated NIH will invest $102 million in FY'05. This amount pales in comparison with the $23 billion annual cost of MS in the U.S., and the comparison demonstrates the clear need to increase MS research at NIH. With nearly 60 years of extensive research experience and a current annual research budget of over $35 million, the National MS Society is committed to working with NIH to prioritize and co-fund a variety of research projects.
