Guest guest
my son is the same, he hangs around with the girls at kinder not the boys. the boys are really aggressive I noticed when I volunteered.how big is your son on keeping a routine? do you think he'd be able to handle the 2 locations? My kiddo is 3.5. He was recently evaluated by the public schools and they want to enroll him in the fall for their half day program so that they can provide him services he needs for his (mild) Asperger's. He has a very big vocabulary but doesn't really do a lot of " normal " back and forth in a conversation. He also randomly hits or pushes other kids. He might just be walking by and will push them and then keep on going. Not sure why he does this, but needless to say, the other kids don't like it much. Here's the question: He's been in a private preschool this school year and has only made 2 friends, both girls. The boys in the class don't really include him in play, in fact, they avoid him. Should we enroll him in the public school for the morning session and then put him back in the private preschool in the afternoon? Or is this too much for him to handle? The public school classroom will consist of 10 HFA kids and 5 " regular " students. He's pediatrician recommends he be exposed to as many " regular " kids as possible so that he doesn't regress in his development. Any thoughts? Thanks so much! ------------------------------------
Guest guest
He's very active. Full of energy all the time and does not nap any longer. He has been in a different full day program 2x a month for about 6 months and did really well there. Another option with the private preschool is to put him in with a new group of kids. The teacher thinks that it might be good for him to get a fresh start with a new group of peers so that he does not fall into the same (poor) relationships with his peers. Not sure how I feel about that option. Any advice is greatly appreciated! > > > My kiddo is 3.5. Guest guest
my son is repeating kinder this year. first few weeks were a bit tough as he kept asking for kids from last years class that have now moved on to school. he adapted so it shouldn't be a problem. just make sure he knows what is happening well in advance, maybe with a social story or photos of the inside and outside areas of the new location. Guest guest
If I were 3 and a half, I wouldn't want to go to two different places in one day. And I'm not sure how much of so-called 'normal' kids 'rub off' on kids with autism? My 2-cents. :*) Francine Speak with Him Thou for He hearest. Spirit with Spirit can speak. Guest guest
my son ignores them. he sticks to himself. lashes out physically if they interrupt his play etc. they consider that he is " naughty " but really, what do kids at that age know about the word autism? they comment on the behaviour he exhibits. Guest guest
I see your point. He's pretty isolated from his peers at the private preschool and I'm not so sure it will be any different if he continues there with a new group of peers. The two girls that he is friends with, really like him too. It's hard to deprive him of his friends, though I don't know if 2 environments would be confusing to him. Especially since he is trying to learn to control his behavior, which would be supported at the pubilc school, but possibly (er, most likely) not addressed at the private preschool. > My kiddo is 3.5. Guest guest
I would say that at his age, half day would probably be a good amount of time. A full day of school can be tough for any child at that age. Have you tried to find any play groups in your area? That might help with the social interaction for him with the neurotypical crowd. Part of his reactions- the pushing for no noticable reason, could be in part his age still, as well. My aspie matured much slower- before she was diagnosed, I would describe her as " Socially and emotionally immature " - she acted much younger than she was in how she interacted with people. I would start out the year in a half day program, and see where he is at the half way point, or at the start of next year. If the school still only wants to do half day next year, he'll be older, and maybe more able to handle going to the second pre-school for the other half of the day. You'll also want to look at what the public school does for Kinder. Do they do a full day? If they do, then it may be a great time to get him used to the full day by doing 2 preschools next year. > > My kiddo is 3.5. Guest guest
Right now you need to do what you think is best. I myself think most public schools can't give our kids enough attention. I have heard many unhappy stories from people who choose public schools when, they could pick private. My son is currently in a private preschool. It has ABA learning/almost everything. I am not sure if being around normal kids is more important than a good school with good teachers. To: autism-aspergers Sent: Sunday, June 5, 2011 4:54 AMSubject: Preschool Conundrum My kiddo is 3.5.
