Hi Anne,

I asked Dr K this very question, and his answer was to not worry about that. I

replied that my husband and I had summer and winter gardens and wanted to focus

on the plants that would supply me with what was absorbable. He pretty much

told me to forget about getting my nutrients from the garden and be sure to take

all supplements he prescribed. Calcium, multivitamins, etc.

As long as you take the supplements, and get in your protein, I think any

veggies you add would be beneficial to you. Especially high fiber veggies that

will help clean out protein waste from your colon. :)

I now have a summer garden for salad greens, squash and tomatoes, and I keep

hens for fresh eggs. This month we are getting six eggs per day from ten hens!

Anne:

The following gives a real good overview of Magnesium's function in the body and

some high mag. foods. It's an easy to understand/read site. Good reading for

all of us.

Why the interest in magnesium? Constipation? Eating foods to get a natural

source of magnesium is a good thing...but it comes with some problems. It get

complicated in how we prepare foods to how much we destroy the vitamin content.

Plus...the amounts we need to go hand in hand with the amount of calcium we take

generally can't be achieved through eating food alone. Supplementing is the

best, most consistent way to get the magnesium in.

Thanks for your responses!

I take supplements daily so that is not a problem.

According to the general surgeon on the Navy Hospital, I am now absorbing everything I eat and just have to 'fix' my diet.

I dont know how much I believe him, but I figured it doesnt hurt to eat the foods that have the things I figure will make my digestion work better.

I stopped eating any bananas (they cause constipation) and started eating apricots for potassium instead.

I eat prunes daily. take my vegetable laxatives every night. eat high fiber foods. eat yogurt probiotics. etc., etc., etc.

I am trying hard to eat only high protein. I crave sweet and salt terribly, so it is difficult to keep away from the carbs. I eat an apple really really slowly to satisfy the sweet cravings. I eat frozen yogurt cups (have to eat slow cuz it is hard to get it out of the container..LOL) for 'desert' cravings. I eat a few trisquit type wheat crackers to help with the salt cravings.

I spend a great deal of time telling myself that I am not hungry. Dont need anything. Ignore it and it will go away. Dinner is not too far away..so dont eat anything til then. You know...the same old diet tricks from all the years before the DS.

I was never good at dieting. Working hard at it though.

My 70 pound weight gain is very depressing. I am a fat size 16 after being a thin and fit size 8/10 for those couple years. sigh.

I go to the 24hr fitness center and ride the bike 30 to 45 minutes a day now. I have to push myself past the pain in my knees sometimes, but I generally feel better after a workout. They have a machine there with heavy 'basketballs' that you use for an Ab workout..kinda fun! I can really feel it in my ribcage area. There is a water aerobics class on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays that I am going to try to get to. The pool is a better place for 'injured' folk to workout without so much pain. Now that my back pain is pretty much under control, I can do a lot more.

My only transportation is my motorcycle, so it can be a bit of a hassle to get there in the bad weather. I am glad we dont have too many bad days here in San Diego!

It was a wonderful rain storm today! It poured all night last night and all day today. It is down to an occasional drizzle now. We really needed the water. Supposed to have a new storm coming in on Wednesday. It feels like winter for a change!

Hope all is well with everyone!

Anne

I apologize but I didn't catch the beginning of this thread. How long ago did you have your DS? Have you spoken with Dr. K. I didn't realize you could eventually absorb everything you eat.

Thanks,

Debbie
