'Gold Coast Cure' battles MS with diet

By Carolyn Susman

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, May 18, 2005

Question: The Gold Coast Cure claims to prevent or reverse 12 diseases. How is that possible?

Answer: "It's strong language, but there are various studies on most of these inflammatory conditions showing that they can be improved with diet. Many of the ideas in our book are similar to the Omega diet (by Dr. Artemis Simopoulos.) We're deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids. Many conditions are affected or made worse (by this) when there is inflammation in your body," says Dr. Larson, known as Andy.

"If somebody's been debilitated for 15 years, we're not saying you'll hop out of the wheelchair. You will improve your health." adds Ivy Ingram.

Q: Why did you start the book? You were already on a diet recommended by your doctor.

A: "I went on the Swank diet from Day One (a low-fat diet developed by Dr. Roy L. Swank.)," Ivy said. "I was eliminating saturated fat. But I still was eating trans fats, sugar, vegetable oil. I was not doing the whole thing. It took three years to write the book. You have to test it on people to see if people still stick with it. It's a whole foods diet."

Q: What about the exercise portion? (The book comes with a DVD.)

A: Ivy has an American College of Sports Medicine certification.

"I developed a program of 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, for me. We're big fans of using weights, strength, and balance with MS."

Q: Are you on any medications now?

A: Ivy says, "I am free of all medications. For a while, occasionally if the bladder flares up, I took something. But that was two years ago or so."

Adds Andy, "The medications for fatigue and spasms? She got off them pretty quick."
