Guest guest
That's wonderful! way to go and Madeleine! :-) (And we can report the same. We prepared and practiced and had an uneventful start last year. No drama! Thanks once again from Sandi and Allie for all the help and suggestions!) In a message dated 5/21/2011 8:17:09 A.M. Guest guest
That is such a relief, isn't it! I still remember the dread & ours was uneventful too. PMS is harder to explain b/c moods are too abstract for her to understand, but all in all, things are still fine at 19. Guest guest
So glad to hear, ! My daughter's start was pretty smooth too, six years ago. She does fairly well, just doesn't tend to notice leaks. And cleanliness is an issue. But she doesn't seem fazed, which is all in all a very good thing. Here's to our wonderful girls! Guest guest
Did you say she's 6 yrs old & already having her period?! Wow, precocious puberty? We started practicing with pantiliners, just putting it on & immediately taking if off & gradually increased the time. When she was OK with pantiliners, we advanced to thicker pads in increments & again increasing the time, til she could handle wearing regular pads. Guest guest
Hi Kristi. Your daughter is going through precocious puberty. I'd strongly recommend that you take her to a pediatric endocrinologist for evaluation and treatment. The problem with precocious puberty is that once a girl starts her menses, she's on a rather limited " time clock " if you will for linear growth. The typical treatment for this (although I'm not a doctor) is Lupron, a synthetic hormone that will delay puberty and consequently, her periods, until she reaches an appropriate age. Also, it will give her more time to grow. Good luck. Sue Kabala > > Hi I my name is kristi and I have a 6 yr old that started her cycle in dec of last yr any advice? Guest guest
If your daughter started her period and she is only 6 years old, then you need to take her to a pediatric endocrinologist. She probably has precocious puberty. Starting her period at such a young age can affect her growth. (She may be a lot taller than her peers and may stop growing a lot earlier, but not obtain a good adult height due to her bones fusing earlier than they should.) I used to be very involved with an organization in Chicago called MAGIC Foundation that deals with children's growth disorders. One of their divisions is Precocious Puberty. Here is a link to their website that can give you some information on it. If you have any questions, you can call them or send them an email and they will be happy to answer them. (My daughter was Growth Hormone Deficient and that is how I was involved in the organization.) Guest guest
Wow! I am so happy it went smoothly. My daughter is 9.5 and I have a feeling she will be around 10 when she starts. What changes did you notice before she started? My daughter already has breasts and is starting to sprout hair down there...so I am sure it will be sooner than later. I dont think she will understand what is happening, but she doesnt mind wearing a pad. I am just so afraid she will constantly have her hands down there trying to figure out what is happening. Hopefully it goes the same way as your daughter! Summer Re: Our daughter's period started! So glad to hear, ! My daughter's start was pretty smooth too, six years ago. Guest guest
Hi Summer. My daughter first showed signs of breast development 2 1/2 years ago, so her first period was still far off at that point. She developed hair under her arms within the last 6 months or so - - I guess that was the last bodily change to occur before her period began. I think the thing that helped my daughter the most was seeing MY periods! I would make a point if bringing her in the bathroom with me and showing her my pads l, explaining I was bleeding but it didn't hurt and I was okay. I guess after seeing this situation enough she just internalized the bleeding as normal and to be expected. Also, invest in good quality, absorbant but thinner pads. It isn't necessary to buy the super thick, bulky pads. Who would want to wear those anyway! Sent from my iPhone S. Dickson Wow! I am so happy it went smoothly. Guest guest
Hey Kristi, I agree with everyone that a 6 year old starting her period is a reason to take her to a doctor. That is way too early to start even when a daughter has a disability. That said, can you get her to wear one of those thin pads with the pull up? Tell her the pad is for the blood but not to wet the pull up. See if she goes for it. I also let both of the girls see me removing and putting on a pad. It made the world of difference when they started. Let us know how your daughter is doing. Mylinda Elliott
