The Steroid Warning Network is a non-profit organization devoted to providing information and emotional support for those who suffer from steroid-related medical problems. When people hear the word "Steroid" they usually think of the illegal anabolic kind. The epidemic of anabolic steroid use has been in the news especially recently with the discovery of the new so called "designer" steroids in many pro athletes. Information about anabolic steroid side-effects can be found in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section of our website. If you scroll down to the second to last category of the "More Links" section you will find articles about the side-effects and problems caused by anabolic steroids. Often those considering anabolic steroid use are not even aware that with men anabolic steroids can cause their testicles to shrink, their breasts to grow, in women and men they can cause infertility, liver failure, baldness and violent mood swings, referred to as 'Roid Rage'. Those are just a few of the possible side-effects, some life-threatening. But at least the people using iilegal anabolic steroids know they are using steroids. What much of the public is not aware of is they may be using legal steroids, (corticosteroids) in their prescriptions or in an over-the-counter cream. Many of the people who post to our message board were given a shot by their doctor that they were not told was a steroid or were not informed of the possible side-effects and consequently their health and lives have neen adversly effected. Steroid therapy can be a life saving treatment for many medical conditions it is the only treatment. The Steroid Warning Network believes that steroid therapy should always be a last resort and then used in the smallest effective dose. You would be surprised to learn where steroids are hiding. You may be taking steroids and not even know it. Prescribed and used correctly, steroids can work wonders. But when safeguards are ignored, it is just plain bad medicine. The tragic results are evident in those whose lives have been devastated, their bodies ravaged by the effects of steroids prescribed by their doctors. Lives are devastated, not only those of the ones who become ill, but everyone who loves that person. There are many forms of steroid prescriptions. Besides being in eye drops, shot and pill form, they are found in nose sprays, inhalers and skin creams. Children are at particular risk. Steroid-induced medical conditions are so difficult to recognize, doctors are often diagnosing in the dark. The unsupervised nature and ease of accessibility to over-the-counter products containing steroid ingredients is a growing concern as expressed in the West Indian Medical Journal (1993);"Even greater concern arises from The case with which the patient obtained these potent drugs on demand over a prolonged period." The case referred to was a woman who'd self-medicated for 15 years using over-the-counter topical creams that contained steroids to treat her psoriasis. She almost died and ended up with steroid-induced Cushing's Syndrome and numerous other steroid-induced medical problems. My use of a cream (which I was unaware contained steroids) caused a severe case of Cushing's syndrome. This condition adds fat to every cell of the body, plus causes many serious complications. My appearance changed, hideously. I became a humpback with a bloated face and developed a leak in the valve to my heart and a multitude or steroid-induced medical problems. As skin eruptions from cysts and ingrown hairs mutilated and deformed me, I hid from the stares and the monster in the mirror. What happened to me is happening to others nationwide from various steroid prescriptions. Many physicians and pharmacists fail to inform consumers about steroids in their medications; manufacturers do not label their products as containing steroids. Many doctors do not follow manufacturers' recommendations for testing and usage. These incompetencies are proving fatal. Many of our members suffer from steroid-induced diabetes. Steroids are the most common cause of Cushing's Syndrome. Steroid prescriptions continues to increase, to more than 30 million in 1996 alone, according to IMS America, a pharmaceutical market research firm. Dr. Orth, of Vanderbilt University, estimates that "250,000 people a year develop Cushing's from high doses of steroids for long periods". Dermatologist, Dr. Brodell warns of the Addiction of topical corticosteroids and "Dramatic flare-ups" when their usage is stopped, in his April 1993 Post Graduate article,"Topical Corticosteroid Addiction'and in his many seminars. Steroid-induced medical problems can mimic many other medical conditions. Often this causes physicians to treat symptoms instead of recognizing the underlying problem. A physician may hand out manufacturers' samples and not be aware that they contain a steroid. The Steroid Warning Network is currently working for federal legislation in the labeling of steroids. We provide vital information that could save lives and emotional support to lift the spirit. The Steroid Warning Network desperately needs donations to continue to provide our services.
