Guest guest
There's no one good answer to this question. Vit D production decreases with age, latitude, skin color, low cholesterol, time of year, medications taken, etc. As a very general rule of thumb, healthy persons in their teens/twenties can produce 10,000-20,000 iu in ~20 min on a sunny summer day, especially in the South. Don't apply sunscreens till you've 15-30 min. of exposure, again depending on the intensity of the sunshine. Thoroughly research your choice of sunscreen. Some are downright harmful and may exacerbate your illnesses. Your best protection, in my opinion, is to gradually maintain a good tan and save sunscreen for those times when you just can't avoid risking overexposure. You can get your doc to check your Vit D levels and loosely correlate your depth of tan with your level. Cod liver is a good idea to help supp. Vit. D as well as omega 3s, especially in the Fall/Winter. Guest guest
The heck with a tan! Why??? I used to tan when I was younger *cough* instead of the 29 I am now *cough*!* Now I get out in the sun on my patio in the morning and let it shine on my face, and roll up my sleeves, and I soak up that great feeling of nature and goodness. If you're not a nature/gardening person, you don't understand what it's like to NOT be able to do those things anymore. It kills me. The sun also has a healing effect on things like skinned knees, like the last time I fell. The sun will clear up acne, help heal wounds, and just plain mmake you feel good to get out there and sit. Try it. my two more cents.... ~ cyd *love all you kids!* =^= spacecadet =^= -----Original Message-----From: low dose naltrexone [mailto:low dose naltrexone ] On Behalf Of tim .Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 8:02 AMlow dose naltrexone Subject: Re: [low dose naltrexone] Vit D & SunThere's no one good answer to this question.Vit D production decreases with age, latitude, skin color, low cholesterol, time of year, medications taken, etc.As a very general rule of thumb, healthy persons in their teens/twenties can produce 10,000-20,000 iuin ~20 min on a sunny summer day, especially in the South.Don't apply sunscreens till you've 15-30 min. of exposure, again depending on the intensity of the sunshine.Thoroughly research your choice of sunscreen. Guest guest
Here is my thoughts on sunscreen Like an umbrella is used in the rain to help keep you dry so should sunscreen be used in the sun to keep the rays away from the damaging level or to the burn point. So if you can't get out of the sun in say twenty or thirty minutes then you must use sunscreen to give yourself the extra time needed to hide again. Since I never leave my yard except to head indoors after a half hour of sun I don't use sunscreen unless I head out to an auction sale where I will be out in the sun for hours, since I don't do beaches where sunscreen comes into it's own what with the reflection off the water and the sun in the sky it is most important.
