Guest guest
Hi Era, I am fairly new to this as well and live in the Houston area. I have 4 kids as well and having two of my kids tested in the morning. My son (11) has always been diagnosed with ADHD and has been taking Concerta on and off for the past 5 years. I started noticing odd behaviors and that's what has me getting testing done. He was diagnosed by Texas Children's Neurobehavioral Dept. back in Oct. 2006 at the age of 6 and ASD was never a factor. I have told psychiatrists over and over again that something was being overlooked and finally decided to find another direction by taking him to be re-evaluated. This psychologist already has my son pinned for ASD but he is still goin to test him tomorrow to get the full scope of his diagnosis. My daughter is fairly new to the psychological testing as she is 7, but with as much problems we have been having with her, we felt it best to have her tested as well. Anyway, when I applied for my son back in 2008, I just went to the SSA and asked to apply. I had many of my documents ready, such as his papers from the doctors, names and addresses of all the schools, doctors or anyone who may have seen him. I also had his IEP and ARD information, paystubs, any bills, rent/mortgage papers, child support or any other relevant paperwork. You will need to tell them about your assets, such as vehicles, boats, rental homes, etc. They asked a bunch of questions and that was it really. I got the decision back quickly. Also, if they do qualify for SSI benefits, they automatically will receive medicaid. Your ADHD kids should be considered as well and your 18-year-old can be considered if he still lives with you and in school. What part of Houston are you in? I am on the North side between I-45 N and Beltway 8. If you just wanna chat about anything, I am always available and can always use someone locally whom we can network with. Guest guest
Clarisa I am actually in the Katy area just West of Houston. Thank you for the information about the SS. I will start collecting my information and then take it and apply. I am curious where you are taking your children for their evaluations. I am looking for a new Psychiatrist for my boys as we had several problems with the last one and our Pediatrician is currently just refilling the meds as needed. I would love to chat and network with you. My personal email is erakay.hill@... and I am also on FB. Please let me know in the subject line how I know you because I tend to delete if I don't know a person... Thank you again! Guest guest
I just found out today that my family qualifies for a subsidy- it's not full out disability. The amount is the same for every family (the website did not say whether or not we would get the set amount per month with 2 kids with asd, or if we would get the set amount per kid each month). The one I found is Michigan based, funded through the state, and it does require a few things. * The child must be under the age of 18 * The child's family must have a taxable income of under $60,000 on the last year's taxes. * The child must have an IEP in place that lists a Cognitive Impairment (CI), or a Severe Multiple Impairement (SXI), or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as the qualifier for the IEP. The payment is $222.11 per month. Again, I'm not sure if that is per family, or per kid. Obviously, this isn't for kids in Texas, but maybe there is a similar program in Texas that allows for a subsidy to help families out. The goal with the one in Michigan (which is called Family Support Subsidy Program) is to A) keep kids with their family when finances are the reason they can't keep the kids, return kids to their parents, and C) provide help for families who need it. The subsidy does not have any restrictions on it as to how it can be used, from what I see. It specifically says: " Uses for the subsidy might be the purchase of additional therapies, special equipment, special food, paper diapers, transportation costs, in-home specialized care, respite care, family counseling, support groups, general household expenses, family recreation, and home remodeling to provide for the special needs of the child " " This list is not all-inclusive. A unique feature of this subsidy is that the family decides its use to suit their needs. " Basically- you can you use it for anything you feel the family needs to help survive- grocery, house hold expenses like rent or bills, etc. The info for Michigan's program is on their .gov site- go to the Texas.gov site and do a search for the word 'Autism', that's how I found the info after being told about it. > > I am a fairly quiet member of this group.
