Hi Rosemary

I sent plans for a power rack to the site and a few guys who requested it

directly a few months back so that should be in the archives somewhere. If

you can't find it I can email it direct if you'd like. Also have photos of

the prototype to help visualise it.

I can also do plans for strongman equipment that we have made - yoke, basque

circle, car deadlift stand, metal log, etc. if anyone is interested.

I think Iain Murray - fellow supertrainer has plans to put the plans on his

website - www.fitlike.net - so check that out in the near future.

Cheers

You might want to try going to a good welder and talking over what you want with

them. That is what I have done foe a couple of pieces of equipment and it worked

really well. That way you can customize the equipment any way you would like.

Rosemary,

The following link is for a book on welding. It has an entire

section on building exercise equipment. I have not purchased the

book yet but became interested in welding after seeing the plans

submitted by Stuart Wadley many months ago (nice plans by the way).

After searching the internet for books on welding and looking at my

local library this was the only book I found that had plans and

instructions on building exercise equipment. Although I have seen a

couple of web pages and one book that offered plans specifically for

exercise equipment made out of lumber.

As a side note for Stuart, I would definitely be interested in your

plans for some strongman equipment. I have drawn up my own from

photographs of Sarden, Viking Strength, and Iron Sport equipment.

Here are the photographs:

I have built some of my own equipment. I don't think you need any

plans. All you need to do is go find equipment you like with a tape

measure and a piece of paper and draw your own plans. All you need

to be able to do is render it in a 3-view 'unfolded' perspective -

something that you should be able to pick up by looking at a

blueprint or two. I have all the steelworking equipment and skills

to do it myself, but even if you're getting someone else to do it, I

think you can make your own plans. You can also change dimensions or

add stuff to suit your fancy. This way you'll get exactly what you

want.

Rosemary,

There is a book entitled " Welding Projects " by A. Ruck, ISBN

1566375029. Apparently this book contains a number of " homemade " exercise

equipment projects.

A number of web sites containing instructions on how to build exercise

equipment:

www.old-dude.com/garage/photopage.html Very good

www.bigsteel.iwarp.com/custom4.html

www.btinternet.com/%7Eburnedwell/HMLifting/index.htm

I found " Old-dude " especial helpful, if you use kettlebells. I built a

couple of kettlebells using instructions at this website.

I have tried searching, to no avail, both the Net and the ST

archives trying to find out where a person can purchase plans to

build their own weight equipment. I know I've seen this somewhere.

Does anyone on the List have any ideas where I might look or know of

any sources that sell plans? Any help is very much appreciated.

To all the Supertrainers who answered my plea as to where to find

information on how to build one's own weight equipment, thanks for

all the wonderful ideas. I have checked out all the links and there

is some really interesting and innovative stuff! One of the List

members has agreed to write an article for Dolfzine telling how to

build a rack. I realize that to someone who is skilled in shop,

this is not a problem, but we'd like to give people a list of needed

materials, etc. They may indeed have to take the plans to a welder

who may not train so this would be most helpful. Since we have many

readers in countries where it is next to impossible to find good

equipment and ghastly expensive to import it, this will be something

that will be very helpful to them.

Back in the mid-1990's, I paid a visit to the original Westside in

Columbus, OH, where Louie hooked me up to a sled and had me drag it

up and down the parking lot. I had never seen this before and was

quite impressed. This was before these were being manufactured and

the one I pulled was homemade. It took some photos, wrote down the

dimensions and having never touched a welding torch, took

instructions to a local shop. They made me a beauty and a couple of

the welders who trained themselves were quite taken with it (having

tested it out in the shop!). It cost me less to have made than what

I could have purchased one for (after they went on sale). It wasn't

as pretty, but after a few drags on the street, it really didn't

matter. The best part of sled dragging is watching the neighbors

peering out from behind their curtains as you scrape along the

street, a sort of fingernails on blackboard sound. Because of that

I switched to a vacant lot (this device would definitely ruin the

landscaping) and found that the drag of the loose soil made the job

that much more difficult, especially when you hit a gopher hole. It

made me appreciate the strength required of the pioneers who spent

their days pulling a plow.

Rosemary,

The late J.V. Askem published 2 short books entitled " Tightwads's

guide to a home gym " and " The Cable-Bar System " , . Randall Strossen of

IronMind Enterprises has republished both, available on the Ironmind

website (http://www.ironmind.com)

Hope this helps.
