Guest guest
I have not read this about the Sharper Image air purifier, though I am certainly not going to dispute what you say. What I HAVE read about it is that it produces ozone, which is really bad for asthma patients. So as well as they want to claim it works, it seems that it is one to stay away from. Did Consumer Reports say anything about the Oreck air purifier? (I'm also trying to figure out which one I want to get for my apartment.) I live in a new neighborhood development and the dust from the construction is making me fell horrible. Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced air purifing system. Guest guest
Negative ions is something the company admits to. But they did one of those investigative reports, or maybe it was a consumer reports sort of thing, on one of our local TV stations, and they said that the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze creates ozone. That's the only source I have on that, and I'm not gonna buy one to do the scientific studies myself. ;-) Vali From: " kathy lintzenich " <mykittypaws@...> Date: Tue May 24, 2005 7:23 pm RE: Interferon Beta 1a and LDN/air purifiers i didn't think it was ozone. i thought it was negative ions. i have two in our house and the salesperson said it wasn't ozone. before that we had an alpine machine which was the ozone and heard negative things about it just as it was breaking down!!! fate!!!! kathy RE: Interferon Beta 1a and LDN Hi there! Guest guest
I just read in Consumer Reports that Whirlpool and another that I can't recall how to spell, Friedrach or something like that were the only two tested that had low ozone and worked. Said the ionizers aggrevate asthma and allergy sufferers. I've read and compared and have come to the conclusion that they are worthless. I also tried the Oreck which sounded really good and it's soon to be on it's way back to them. They have real sensitive wires in the washable metal filter and after second time of me washing, the thing woke me up at 2am sounding like an electrocution. They tried to send me another one but I won't trust any again especially leaving them running while gone and sleeping and I'm just glad it short circuted when I was home. Another person told me they had a Holmes and they came home to theirs smoking. I have mold in my plenum and air ducts which isn't helping me to breathe fungus. People say fungus is everywhere but it can't be healthy to have it blowing thru vents. I did a mold test and got black, white, green, orange molds growing like mad in the petri dish. I plan to put one outside and in crawl space to compare. My problem is I have a damp crawl space which is a hazard period. Here's a site someone gave me to compare air purifiers. www.allergybuyersclub.com I also did google searches and found consumer reports on them. It can really be confusing and I gave up after the Oreck. Guest guest
why can't you kill some of the mold with bleach? one of the things my husband does id mold detection and I know he has used bleach to kill black mold. Guest guest
Some duct people told me that they use sporcidin which is a pesticide and I would have to treat every 6 months to control mold. I don't think pesticides would be good for me and my exotic vet said not to use it with my bunnies. I'm not sure if I can clean the plenum by myself with bleach and the ducts will still have mold/spores in them. I bought an electomagnetic filter but that will only do so much. I shouldn't get lots of molds in the petri dish normally should I by setting it out for one hour then incubating it? I also get a smell when ac/heat is running but not all the time. When I get a new heat pump I wonder how to keep it from molding. I run a fan under the house towards the plenum but seems it hasn't helped. I've been there nearly 12 years and progessed with allergies badly. Wonder could the molds cause my brain lesion. I don't actually see the mold indoors but obviously have the mold spores. I even found fuzzy mold in my toilet tank and put the bleach tablets in there b/c I have a water filter that takes out chlorine. I feel like my house is killing me. Looked into french drains also which cost a fortune. Guest guest
Hi Rhonda, I bought the Ionic BQ. It gave off a great deal of ozone, and I felt much the worse for it. I've been struggling with many allergies for years, and have found that the Hepa filters seem to help as much as anything. I can't tollerate running them in the room with me, but do what many super-allergic people do: clear the bedroom during the day and the rest of the place while I am out, then turn the filters off. (never had a fire) Air out, dry out, filter and Clorox are the best bets I know for mold -- yes, it is a killer. I don't know if you have heard of the Human Ecology Action League (HEAL), but they might be a resource for you. They have a publication and can be helpful, especially if you can get in touch with members. Some practitioners list themselves as Clinical Ecologists and might be of help, you might find something on Google. Good luck, ine PS get rid of your rugs! --- Rhonda <rhondaleokitty@...> wrote: > Some duct people told me that they use sporcidin > which is a pesticide > and I would have to treat every 6 months to control > mold. Guest guest
For mold....use Oxygen Bleach....like Oxy Clean at Home Depot. Guest guest
thomasine just gave you some great advice rhonda, black mold can kill you and it is especially bad for children, the elderly or someone with a compromised immune system.
