My menus are pretty much the same each day.... here is what is expected for

today.....

M1: Optimum Nutrition protein shake made with water. and 1/2 cup oatmeal.

M2:1/2 bottle nitro tech ready to drink nutrition (one bottle has 40 g

protein, and I thought that would be too much for me) and it has no

carbs....I also have a container of fat free flavored yogurt from yoplait.

which has 19g carbs to match the 20g carbs from the drink. (this total meal

is about 200 calories)

M3:Spinach salad made with red bell peppers, onions, tomatoes and chicken

breast...add 2 tablespoons maple grove farms lite pesto parmesan dressing.

M4: cottage cheese and yogurt

M5:chicken tacos with tomatoes, lettuce and onion added.

M6:Usually a protein shake made with fat free milk, or cottage cheese/fruit,

or protein pudding (from the BFL book or website, forgot where I got it.)

This usually follows my daily routine besides M5 I change everyday because

that is our dinner meal. I also drink about a gallon of water a day.

What do you think? The optimum nutrition shakes have about 22 g protein per

serving...do you think I am getting too much protein?

Dave,

I am jogging/walking for my aerobic activity. Usually, jogging will shed fat

really fast on me, but for some reason I am getting bigger. My husband says

it is because I am getting older, but I don't think that is the case, I am

about to turn 25 years old, and I have never had this problem before when I

have exercised.

Nikki when I read what you wrote here, my first impulse was to also

get concerned. After I sat back for a minute I realized a few things

so I would want to ask some questions before jumping to conclusions.

Are the four inches you gained in the waist? If not or not all of them

could you give the location of the gains?

How is your water intake, is it at the 1 gallon per day level?

Nikki,

Post a few days' worth of menus and include quantities of each food.

If it's nutritional (which is very possibly the issue, as it is with

LOTS of people) then some of the experts here can steer you in the

right direction.

If it's not nutrition, then there's a possibility that you are

gaining muscle faster than you are losing fat. This is nothing to be

alarmed about, as the fat loss WILL catch up. As I'm sure you

already know, these things don't always follow the path that we would

like them to.

Like said, watch your form on ab exercises because that could be

leading to problems in the waist measurement. However, post those

menus first thing so we can take a look at them and fix problems (if

there are any to fix, that is). :)

Make sure you measure yourself at the same time each day you do it.

Your body tissue will swell after you workout. Do not measure

yourself right after you workout or you won't be happy with the

results. :)

Just give it some more time. If you aren't pregnant, I think that

this growing trend will reverse itself.

Nikki from what you are describing I do not think that you are gaining

fat. From that point on there are a few things to look at and one of

them is what Dave has mentioned, but it is not limited to riding a

bike. When an area starts getting hit with hard consistant work the

blood flow to the area increases and this can expand the blood veins

and capulary. The blood being forced into the muscle tissue also can

cause expansion. Now when you look at that plus the amount of " Pump

being placed into the ab - hip - thigh area from the amount of cardio

and from the workouts you begin to see where you might gain some in

size without increasing fat. Add to this any increase in muscle mass

and what you will see is an increase in the tape. You could also be

retaining some water in the epidermal layer under the skin, as this

often increases with work load as well.

This can happen to any body part for awhile but is most common in the

waist. Well perhaps most mentioned in the waist because we all become

so focused on that area. Abs are important but most people really do

over work them. First when doing resistance training the Abs and the

stabalizer muscles of the waist area get worked each workout - then

adding a large amount of ab work can actually have a reverse effect

from what people want. If looking for a small waist it makes little

sence to build up the muscle too much in the waist area as this will

just make the waist thicker.

My conclusion - sight unseen and just from what has been said here:

I feel this is a reaction of blood storage - muscle mass increase -

water retention and pump. This should continue for a while and then

begin to drop off.

Check your food choices also for unseen sugars and dextrose.

Nikki there is one more theory I have had on this and I have no

scientific proof or even others opinions that agree with me, its just

something I thought about when a simular thing happened to me.

There is brown fat and white fat ... also known as old fat and new

fat. Each day the body uses some of the fat we store and then

replaces it during the day. When storage reaches more than use, we

gain fat. So looking at that I realized that with time even the fat

layer can compact and become solid. This is the reason that with a

46 " waist it seemed solid. Now as we get through the new fat and

start to use the old/brown fat it has to break down for the body to

use it. My theory is that as it breaks down, it swells because of the

water it takes in to make it soluable for use.

Often you hear of people becoming softer and flabbier while they are

losing weight and thats what I think a lot of it is.

If you stick to the nutrition - cardio - workouts for another three

weeks and this trend has not reversed, then look at other options.

Most important rule " Never become dicouraged or frustrated - just

another challenge and you will over come " .

I wonder if that brown/white fat theory came from the diet

companies? Brown fat is most prominent in newborn animals. In human

infants it comprises up to 5% of body weight, then diminishes with

age to virtually disappear by adulthood. The rest of the theory may

be sound. I don't know.

An aricle I found says that body fat is stored in two places in the

body: subcutaneously, or under the skin, and viscerally, or around

the internal organs. Visceral fat is much easier to mobilize (lose)

than subcutaneous fat, although it increases with age. Interestingly,

this age-dependent increase in visceral fat is why body fat

calculators should factor in your age: two people with the same

skinfold (subcutaneous fat) measurements might have much different

overall levels of body fat because of the contribution of visceral

fat to the equation.

I am wondering if she is losing the visceral fat while building

muscle so her measurements are growing.

I found a lot of info at http://www.stumptuous.com/bodyfat.html, a

lengthy, but interesting 4 part article.
