That's excellent Debi,

Have you found that Allie is modeling the your NT kid's behaviors and actions

when it comes to chores?

cleaning/chores update

Hey all, after our last thread about cleaning, I made a month long

calendar starting with my two NT kids of daily chores. I spoke with

them first as an example to Allie so she could catch on, then I made

Allie's chore chart. We did simple things, like on one day Allie's

only job is to sort out all her various art supplies in the proper

bins. The rule is a parent & each child has to sign off on their own

chart for each day to get their allowance at the end of the week.

Craig & I also have our daily chores on a list.

We're 6 days into it so far but the change around her has been near

miraculous. Dinah & Jess can't wait to get their chores done & signed

off. I have to prompt Allie to do it, but she seems to comply quite

well. She doesn't have a strong attention to detail & I have to

redirect, but our plan for January is simply to get the habit formed.

Allie once again proved she can do more than she shows us. All this

time I have been putting all her clothes on hangers because of her

fussing. On laundry day Allie hung ALL her clothes on the hangers &

hung in the closet!

I think some of the things making it successful is that I had them

give input as to what they wanted to do, and we made it something a

little different each day. I found like with the dishwasher, after the

3rd or 4th day my oldest was bored with it. They now know there is no

whining or squeaking out of it & still getting their allowance. I have

on Sundays listed their allowance amounts. Each day when I prompt

Allie to begin her chores she says, " On Sunday Allie will get her

allowance and go to walmart for Crayola 64 crayons! " So I would bet

money is another motivator, now that she's made the connection that

money means she gets to pick out stuff & buy.

The best part, since we're all doing something different, we're all

beginning to respect the house more. Dinah for example knows on one

day she has to clean the coffee table so on her off days I see her

picking up her stuff off it. Allie is even putting stuff in her room

more often.

Debi when you said your Allie proved she can do more than she shows you, boy

do I know what you mean!

After that thread, I was really struck by something Sondra had said about

breaking the job down into steps and making lists... well I tried it with

getting Allie to clean her room. I made a list of jobs needed to have her room

clean, and broke complex things down into separate steps.

I handed my Allie the typed sheet I'd made, and was prepared to help her

through it any number of times until she had it down. Usually, cleaning her

room takes hours and hours of whining, obstructing, and avoiding.

Instead, she took off for her room, shut the door, and flew through

everything on the list all by herself in about half an hour. When I was

impressed,

amazed, and utterly thrilled she just looked at me with that teen-age

eye-rolling " Mooomm " look! LOL
