Guest guest
Hello Tami, we have been working on the Special Needs Trust, Guardianship, and related legal issues for , our 16 year old son who has moderate autism. We consulted with private attorneys and were quoted rates of $800-$1500 and up, for the Special Needs Trust and $1,500 and up for the guardianship. We have enlisted the services of Ross & s. They are a Pre-Paid Legal Services Attorney Law Firm and are located in Fort Worth but represent members throughout Texas. (Please note that I am in Independent Associate for Pre-Paid Legal Services but will try to give you fair and balanced input.) They updated my Will and included a Special Needs Trust for , at no additional cost beyond the $35.95/mo. membership fee. We are getting my wife, 's Will done soon, which will also be done at no additional cost. They have estimated that our cost of the Guardianship Process will be in the $750-$1500 range since much of that cost (such as filing fees) is driven by laws of the State of Texas. If interested in considering the option, you can review details about the plan on my website at www.prepaidlegal.com/hu/batts_d . (Since is only 16, we still have time before pursuing guardianship for him, which needs to be in place by his 18th birthday.) I recently attended a Arc of Dallas Guardianship workshop that was given in Dallas area Attorney, Rick O'Conner. He is very knowledgeable and experienced in doing Guardianships, including one for his special needs brother. I believe he quoted rates in the $1500-$2500 range for guardianship. For more details on this option, you can contact Rick at (214) 691-3400. Another objective organization I suggest that you consider consulting with is Special Care Planner Dave Boomstein of HFG Advisors, in Dallas. They consult on special needs planning and administer special needs trusts. Dave can be reached at or DBoomstein@... and offer no cost consultation. I have worked with Dave and he is knowledgable, helpful, and compassionate. Anyone else with questions about the Pre-Paid Legal Services option, can contact me. It's my understanding that this can be very costly and is also somewhat complicated. Can anyone give me advice on how to go about this, or perhaps agencies that help accomplish this? We live in the Austin area.
