Guest guest
Hi Ethelyn: Don't give up! Growth is the corrective force--and it does happen slower as they get older but she's got to grow at some point. What helped me was to keep track of our daughter's growth at home. We have marks on the inside of the doorjam to our office of both of our daughter's height, they love seeing if they've grown. I used it to help me mentally prepare for casting day. If you know from your home measurements that she has not grown one hair in those 3 months then prepare yourself for no correction and pray for growth! I think Jesus and the angels are having tons of laughters everytime Eiddelyn. Like praying for the bird on the street ...that mommy will not hit it! Anyway to set another tone to my update Eiddelyn had her 3rd cast last November 4. Supposedly it would have been on the last week of November but I told the doc that her tummy bulges a lot and always complains of tummy ache so they were able to squeeze her in earlier. This put us back to the " every 3 month schedule " . However, we did not get any correction this time. She started at 32 last April then they were able to straighten it to 28. By August it was down to 22 degrees and this time we are still at 22 degress after 3 mos. I told the doc about how some parents here would say that it take sometime about 3 recasting before the curvature would lower but according to my doc that only happen among young children. Eiddelyn is already 4 so the speed of her growth is not really that much thus correction factor which is the thing that makes this procedure effective is not there any more. Infact he said (the doc) that maybe by about 6 y.o he will already consider surgery. I wonder if there are parents here who had children in the age group of Eiddelyn and how is the correction doing? I mean any children who got corrected in their toddler stage. Ah!!!! that precious 1 year that I missed. Eiddelyn has another issue though she has neurofibromatosis; and I was informed that no matter what scoliosis due to NF can never be corrected. I don't know .....I only belive that miracles happen. I am so glad that there is this group who can empathize with me. Guest guest
I agree with Stepahine (OK, 'm an eternal optimist) that it may indeed be too soon to say your daughter will need surgery. You say her curve is now 22 degrees, right? Why then would the doctor say he'd want to do surgery on her as young as 6 years old? I'm a bit confused - maybe I misunderstood something. By the way, what sort of surgery is he considering? I wish you all the best - and I am still hopeful for a good outcome. Sometimes a curve does remain stable for a while, but with more growth later on, it could possibly correct even more. As mentioned earlier " miracles happen every day " . > > From: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com <infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com> > Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Challenge time!, 11/3/2008, 12:00 am > To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com > Date: Monday, November 3, 2008, 12:44 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > Reminder from: > > infantile_scoliosis Yahoo! Guest guest
Ethelyn,I must agree that it is far too soon to be talking about surgery.Sure she is older and her rate of growth has slowed down a bit, but DO NOT give up hope.22 degrees is not that bad.I know was much younger, but his doctor was ready to go to the brace when his curve was at 20 degrees. After 3 cast(casts 3-5)in a row he basically stayed the same......19-22 degrees. His last cast(#6) he did improve to 15 and the brace has done the rest. From the brace alone his curve has improved to 7-8 degrees. It may take longer for her to improve, but it can happen.Hang in there and keep us posted.TashaMommy of twin boys- and 3 years oldFort Worth, Texas is 7.5 degrees and brace free during the day!!!Casting 14 months and bracing 10 monthsSubject: Re: Eiddelyn's 3rd castTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Friday, November 7, 2008, 3:02 PM I agree with Stepahine (OK, 'm an eternal optimist) that it may indeed be too soon to say your daughter will need surgery.
