Guest guest
I've been a member for a few months but I haven't posted until now. My husband and I were recently talking about some of the upcoming issues we'll face with my youngest step-daughter who is on the spectrum. She's 10, will be 11 in September, and from what we learned at our second-diagnosis meeting with the most recent evaluator, she's in the mid-range. She's probably more functional than some children in that range but we've worked extensively with her to get her to the point she's at now. She still struggles with basic toileting habits, i.e. she occasionally urinates in her pants and was frequently defecating in them but we seem to have those behaviors under control. Our biggest concern is that she is rapidly approaching puberty and we aren't sure how to handle the day she starts menstruating. Has anyone dealt with this before with an autistic child? How did you handle it? Are there resources out there? Thanks in advance!
Guest guest
Great idea! I'm going to try this with my 10 year old who will probably start menstrating soon. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone Dickson What I did with my daughter is to do an ABA program dealing with using pads. We started out with the thinnest pantiliner. We started with the shortest time; put it on the panty, pull it up & immediately take it off. We increased the time til she was comfortable with the pantiliner, then increased the thickness til she was comfortable wearing a pad for several hours. We did this about a year before she started her period. We also did some social stories with it. When she did start her period, she was great with it, even to the disposal. Guest guest
ABA is great. I know it's controversial but I plan to get my daughter on Seasonal, a BCP. You only have your period 4 times a year and it regulates your cycle so you know when it's going to come
