Guest guest
Well, I know it is hard, I had the same problem. I'm telling you....Texas' Gov. are idiotes....they just don't know how much help our kids need. But, the only way is ...you move from TX to MA , NY, FL, any state in the North(better help for AU kids) or you can work in a school. You can get the insurance and the time off where you kids are not in school. Sorry , but unfortunally it is our fault too, cause we don't speak up. Why states like NY, can affored to offere 20hrs of ABA with no cost to parents? Why? some body? rosie Subject: CHIPS is ending... What else can I do???To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Date: Monday, November 3, 2008, 11:29 AM Hi. My children ( 10y NT daughter and 5y ASD son) are on CHIPS currently but it is about to end. I keep getting the letters in the mail saying to renew the chip application because it ends in December. Problem is according to the website we are over the income requirement. Which I think is ridiculous because we barely can pay our bills. I had charged up three credit cards already for my son's needs, plus one was a $2,600 Care credit card because CHIPS dental sucks. They would only do the metal fillings and I said over my dead body and am stuck with credit debt. Plus he needed spacers and anesthesia( which CHIPS would not pay for.) If I send the renewal now they may cut us off before the end of December. I have been soo scared, depressed, and honestly fighting with my husband a lot lately. I can't imagine my kids not having insurance and losing their doctor. My son gets speech and occupational therapy once a week at TCH in the woodlands with the CHIPS. Insurance at my husband job last we looked was almost $500 a month for the family and we can't afford that. I think the name of the insurance was Primary or something like that. Going to a DAN doctor has NEVER even been possible for us. My only thought is I need to find a job or something with good insurance. I heard it is really hard to get a job right now as well. But I have nobody to watch the kids when they are out of school if I am working. I know no job is going to let me stay home every time the kids are off school, early dismissal, or when they are sick. This is my son's first year full day at school. He can only say a few words randomly. It seem like once a week the teacher is calling me to come get him. If I was working I couldn't. Oh God what if my kids get sick and there is not doctor to see them. I am sorry, I am venting as well. Please I need any body's input. Is there anything else besides CHIPS? What are good employment places? I have always got good input from y'all. Thank you in advance!Janice

Guest guest
Have you ever tried getting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for your son's autism? If you qualify, you will get a monthly sum of money, plus Medicaid. Guest guest
Call it autism, not high functioning autism--the definition of high functioning can vary with interpretation.Look at the Young Texans Insurance, or I have heard about a Medicaid buy-in--you cover part up to a limit, Medicaid covers part--someone help me with that info--. Get on the Medicaid waiver program " Interest list " (waiting list). Do you have Easter Seals Rehab facilities near you? My son gets OT at our local one in . They base it on ability to pay if you have no insurance. We can also get SP and PT, but he is doing ok now in those areas. Guest guest
Yes SSI does go by income of the household if the child is under 18. I am not sure of the income limit. I know if we no longer qualify for CHIPS or Medicaid then there is no way we can get SSI for my child. I am trying to think of anything. If I got a job this very second, No employer will let me stay home for the school holiday vacations coming up. My poor husband leaves for work at 7:30 every morning and doesn't get home till 7:00 at night or later every night 6x week. We have a mortgage and many bills so it would be unreasonable to make my husband take a pay cut so we can qualify for CHIPS. I do want to thank everyone for trying to help me. Maybe after Christmas I can try to get some part- time job with benefits... if that is possible. Because after Christmas my kids will no longer have any insurance.. scary thought. Guest guest
Dear Ms Janice I'm feeling for you, cause I had the same problem. I'm working in a school distric (I don't earn much but..give me the time that I need for my kid) because I can have the insurance and the time to be with my son. I know that it is tuff, but hand in there, my dad always told me...."when one door closed, another will open". You are in my prayers and if you need some sitter for the holiday, I may help you out with some days......let me know where do you leave, Now, I do have a kid (8yrs old AU) that he will be with me at all times. Guest guest
Rosie, Thank you so much for the kind words and the offer of help. I am sorry you had the same problem. Working for the school district is exactly what I NEED to do. To have the same days off when my kids do and have insurance. I know it is little pay, my mother in law works for Klein ISD and once they take out the insurance her paychecks are so small. My kids go to Spring ISD but the last I look there were no employment openings. I am going to look again because that would be the perfect position for my current situation. If I could at least have a little extra money from my paycheck after insurance, would be great. I really want to help my husband pay some of our bills and still do everything I possible could do for my children, especially my son with all his needs. I do hope when this door closes, a wonderful door with open. Thank you and God Bless you as well Janice > > Dear Ms Janice > I'm feeling for you, cause I had the same problem. > I'm working in a school distric (I don't earn much but..give me the time that I need for my kid) because I can have the insurance and the time to be with my son. Guest guest
SSI is ~~36,000 for a family of 3-- we are teetering on that, my son gets $1 a month of SSI (they also count any stocks, retirement plans, cars, as income) The $1 gets us medicaid that covers over $1500 a month, so yes it is worth the hassle! Guest guest
> Thank you so much for the kind words and the offer of help. I am > sorry you had the same problem. Working for the school district is > exactly what I NEED to do. To have the same days off when my kids do > and have insurance. I know it is little pay, ... FWIW, I am surviving working full-time with my ASD son and disabled husband by having a job where I can work from home. Although he can't drive the kids anywhere, my husband also helps share being with the kids during the day when needed--your husband can do this too. Have him check out flexible hours at work, his employer's policies on using sick time for sick kids, and remind him he could use some of his vacation time to help cover his kids' daytime needs! I work from home early mornings, evenings and weekends when I have to miss during business hours for appointments, etc. These days, with both parents often working, this type of arrangement is not unusual at all. In my case, I'm an analyst working for a private consulting company, but this type of arrangement is happening in different types of places. My advice would be to keep an open mind, use your imagination, and keep looking so you can make more money.
